The Aceh War, also known as the Dutch War or the Infidel War (1873-1914), was an armed military conflict between the Sultanate of Aceh and the Netherlands which was triggered by discussions between representatives of Aceh and the United Kingdom in Singapore during early 1873. The war was part of a series of conflicts in the late 19th century that consolidated Dutch rule over modern-day Indonesia.

Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat (June 16, 1908 - December 8, 1963) was a Thai career soldier who staged a coup in 1957, thereafter serving as Thailand's Prime Minister until his death in 1963. He was born in Bangkok, but grew up in his mother's home town in Lao-speaking northeastern Thailand and considered himself a northeasterner. During his years as Prime Minister Sarit was a patron of the Lao strongman General Phoumi Nosavan against the communist Pathet Lao guerrillas in the neighboring Kingdom of Laos. Sarit's regime was the most repressive and authoritarian in modern Thai history, abrogating the constitution, dissolving parliament, and vesting all power in his newly-formed Revolutionary Party. Sarit banned all other political parties, imposing very strict censorship of the press after the coup. After Sarit's death, his reputation took a heavy blow when Sarit was discovered to have owned a trust company, a brewery, 51 cars, and some 30 plots of land, most of which he gave to the dozen

Gunther Adolf Ferdinand von Kluge (30 October 1882 - 19 August 1944), also known as Hans Gunther von Kluge, was a German field marshal during World War II who held commands on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. He commanded the 4th Army of the Wehrmacht during the invasion of Poland in 1939 and the Battle of France in 1940. His command on the Eastern Front lasted until October 1943 when Kluge was badly injured in a car accident. Although Kluge was not an active conspirator in the 20 July plot, in the aftermath of the failed coup he committed suicide on 19 August 1944.

Also referred to as Prince Abhakorn of Chumphon, or the Prince of Chumphon, Kromluang Chumphon Khet Udomsak was a son of King Chulalongkorn, Rama V. He was educated at the Naval Academy in the United Kingdom and served as Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy. His statue has been erected in several coastal provinces and is highly revered by the people of Thailand, especially by mariners. Admiral Prince Krom Luang Chumporn Khet Udomsak was the first member of the Thai royal family to graduate in naval education (1919). He was the commanding officer of HTMS Phra Ruang that sailed from Britain to Bangkok. This was the first time a Thai navy officer had ever commanded a royal gunship in a voyage between continents.

Motoo Furushō (14 September 1882 - 21 July 1940) was a lieutenant general of the Imperial Japanese Army and commander of the Japanese 21st Army in 1938 during the Canton Operation. Promoted to lieutenant general in 1933, Furushō took command of the IJA 11th Division in 1934. He subsequently served as Vice Minister of War from 1935-1936. With the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Furushō went to China as commander of the Japanese Fifth Army. In 1938, he became commander of the Japanese 21st Army. He returned to Japan in 1938, was promoted to full general and served as a member of the Supreme War Council until his death in 1940

The war was part of a series of conflicts in the late 19th century that consolidated Dutch rule over modern-day Indonesia. Panglima Polim was an Acehnese commander who fought against the Dutch from the time of the First Aceh Expedition (1873) to 1903, when he surrenderd to Captain Hendricus Colijn at Lhokseumawe, together with 150 of his men. He was given the post of Raja of Sigli by the Dutch. In 1928, Panglima Polim received the cross of Nassau-Oranje Orde.

Liu was a holder of the senior licentiate degree in the imperial examination system. He entered the Hunan army in 1855, and worked under Li Hongzhang during the suppression of the Taiping Rebellion. In recognition of his services, he was created a baron and awarded the position of governor of Jiangxi, a role in which he served from 1865 to 1874. In 1875, he was given the position of Viceroy of Liangjiang, but was almost immediately transferred to the post of Viceroy of Liangguang, where he remained for the next four years. He was then returned to the former post, where he served until 1881. In addition to his regular duties in this post, he was asked in 1880 to advise the emperor on Chinese diplomatic policy toward Russia and Japan. After the French invasion of Vietnam, he also advised the emperor on that matter. Liu spent the next several years in retirement, but was recalled to the same post in 1890. He contained several anti-missionary movements for the next four years, until he was
