Christ on the Cross, from The Passion of Christ 1596-98 Hendrick Goltzius Netherlandish Between 1596 and 1598 Goltzius engraved this series of twelve prints illustrating the Passion of Christ. They reflect the influence of the Netherlandish artist Lucas van Leyden, in both the figure types and the actual engraving technique. In contrast to his normal graphic style, which was characterized by a dramatic line that swells and tapers around the figures and background, here Goltzius uses thin even lines crossed with long straight hatching lines that are typically found in Lucass prints. In Northern Europe at the end of the sixteenth century there was a revival of interest in the works of Lucas and this series can be seen within that larger context. So, too, can Goltziuss famous Pietà modeled after Albrecht Dürer and the Circumcision and the Adoration of the Magi from his series the Life of the Virgin.The Passion of Christ was extremely popular during Goltziuss own lifetime and well beyon

Saint Benedict Orders the Destruction of Idols at Montecassino 1694-1759 Gaspare Serenario Italian This highly finished composition drawing was featured in the Dúrcal sale in 1889 as the work of Domenico Gargiulo, and the artist's nickname 'Spadaro' (for 'Micco Spadaro') was presumably then annotated along the upper border of the sheet. The verso bears an old attribution to Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764). On a visit to the Museum in 1968, Philip Pouncey noted on the mount, "seems close to Sebastiano Conca." Nearly two decades later, Lawrence Turčić pointed out that the drawing appears to be a preparatory study - although with slight variations - for an altarpiece of the same subject by Sebastiano Conca's close Sicilian follower, Gaspare Serenario. This painting (oil on canvas, 454 x 287 cm), was executed by Serenario in Rome in 1739, shipped to Palermo and eventually installed as the main altarpiece in the church of San Giovanni dellOriglione. The canvas is now in the local Museo Dioces

The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated world history. Its structure follows the story of human history as related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is one of the best-documented early printed books - an incunabulum (printed, not hand-written) - and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text.
