His preparatory works have a distinctive substantiality and force, owing to his skill in employing expressive, heavy outlines and dramatic contrasts of light and dark. Achieving these effects in his preliminary drawings through the use of charcoal and chalks (rather than the more restrained medium of pencil), Vedder sought a similar visual effect in his finished paintings by employing equally decisive contours and bold modeling in light and dark. Masterpiece In a Cottage -- A reproductions of the ***** painting.In a tiny cottage in Laburnum avenue Nantwich, Cheshire, where the widow of Archiiald Mackianon lives, is a vast allegorical painting done by her artist husband who died a few weeks ago at the age of eighty six.The picture is 12ft 9ft and took ten years to complete, and it inspired the artist to paint the famous Rock Christ at Davaar in Argyllshire.
