Jean-François de Galoup, Comte de La Pérouse (August 23, 1741-1788) was a French explorer and naval officer. In 1785, the King of France commissioned La Perouse to head an expedition to explore the Pacific Ocean, to investigate whaling and fur prospects, and to establish French claims in this area. La Pérouse had admired the explorer James Cook, and wanted to continue his work. La Perouse was assigned two 500-ton ships called the Astrolabe and the Boussole. His crew of 114 included sailors, scientists, a physicist, three draftsmen, three naturalists, clergymen, and a mathematician. They left France in August, 1785. La Perouse mapped the west coast of North America in 1786, and visited Easter Island and Hawaii. His ships reached the west coast of Alaska in 1786 and did extensive mapping of the North American west coast from Alaska to Monterey, California. In James Tissots epic The Life of Christ, a set of 350 watercolors, his naturalistic style coexists with a decidedly mystical or hallucinatory one, which earned him comparisons to William Blake. These three examples visualize miraculous moments in the narrative. Tissot was a successful society painter who, after experiencing a religious vision in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to spiritual subject matter. He made two trips to Egypt, Syria, and Palestine, where he created extensive figure and landscape studies for his project, believing that this “pencil reporting from the life of Christ” would endow his scenes with historical accuracy. Three heads covering each other., Wenceslaus Hollar, etcher, 1645, Flanders, etching, The immensely prolific and talented Czech printmaker Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) was employed between 1636 and 1644 as an artist and cataloguer in the household of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel, one of the greatest art collectors of his era. The Earl, a victim of the English Civil War, fled overseas and died in 1646, Hollar himself moved with his family to Antwerp in 1644, where this etching would have been made. The return of political stability led to Hollar's return to London in 1652, where he lived and worked until his death.

The figures pictured here, according to Greek mythology, are the Winds. They are, from left to right, top to bottom: Lips, Zephryus, Eurus, and Apeliotes. Lips, or Livos, was the god of the southwest wind. Usually he was shown holding a ship's sternpost because when the wind blew form the southwest into Athens' port harbor of Piraeus, ships could not sail. Zephyrus was the god of the west wind. Zephyrus was the gentlest of the winds and considered a harbinger of springtime. He was pictured with flowers that indicated a mild light breeze. Eurus, or Euros, was the god of the east wind.
