The Holy Family with Two Angels. Artist: Alessandro Algardi (Italian, Bologna 1598-1654 Rome). Dimensions: 10-3/16 x 7-13/16 in. (25.9 x 19.8 cm). Date: 1598-1654.Trained in Bologna in the "Accademia degli Incaminati" founded by the Carracci, Algardi moved in 1625 to Rome, where he spent the rest of his life, excelling in relief and portrait sculpture. This drawing was surely a model for a relief sculpture or a metal plaquette: the handling of the silvery black chalk is vigorous and sculptural, and the high shine of the figures corresponds to the polish of a bronze relief. The figures are in the same scale as those of a bronze plaquette by Algardi of the 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt' in the Museum's Collection (inv. 38.151.11) and the two works may have been connected with the same commission. The iconography of the drawing is unclear: the three jars held by the child may allude to the gifts brought by the three Magi.It is quite possible that this sheet served as a demonstration draw

The Penitent St. Jerome 1539-91 Jost Amman Swiss This is one of the earliest known drawings by Amman, a renowned painter, printmaker, and designer who was barely twenty when he made this masterful copy after a woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder (see 41.1.160). The young artist replaced the arms of the Saxon ruling family with those of his own family and added his monogram, "JAZ" (Jost Amman of Zurich), on the page of the open book held by the saint, possibly out of pride in his work. High-quality, accurate copies like this would have been cherished by collectors, functioning as substitutes for printed impressions..
