Midas Washing at the Source of the Pactolus ca. 1627 Nicolas Poussin French According to ancient myth, King Midas was granted his greedy wish that everything he touched would be turned to gold, but he quickly realized that he could neither eat nor drink. In order to reverse what had become a curse, the god Bacchus instructed Midas to wash in the Pactolus River. Poussin represents Midas here as the smaller, humbled figure behind a classical representation of a reclining river god and two putti whose jugs point simultaneously to the rivers source and to Bacchus, the god of wine. This painting, abounding with Poussins classical erudition, was among the first he completed after arriving in Rome and was among the first paintings to enter The Met in 1871.. Omnia Vincit Amor, or The Power of Love in the Three Elements 1809 Benjamin West American "Omnia vincit Amor," (Love triumphs over everything) is a quotation from Virgils Eclogues. Venus, the goddess of love, is shown at the left with her attributes the doves and with her small son, Amor, armed with bow and arrows, clinging to her draperies. A young deity, presumably Hymen, god of marriage, brandishes a flaming torch with his right hand and grasps in his left cords that leash an eagle. The eagle symbolizes all the creatures living in the element Air, a hippocampus stands for those of the Water, and a lion for those on Earth. The fourth element, Fire, is implicit in the goddess herself, in the winged Amores, or little Loves, and most particularly in Hymens flaming torch.. The Death of Harmonia. Artist: Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (French, Paris 1714-1789 Paris). Dimensions: 77 1/2 x 58 1/4 in. (196.9 x 148 cm). Date: ca. 1740-41.The story is rather an obscure one. Harmonia, the daughter of Gelon II, king of Syracuse, was threatened by conspirators. Her governess tried to save her by exchanging her clothes with those of a slave girl, who, dressed as a princess, was murdered. Moved by the girl's courage, Harmonia revealed her identity and was put to death in 214 B.C. The picture was engraved by Charles Nicolas Cochin I in 1751 and was much praised when it was exhibited in the same year.
