Marble sarcophagus with the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons ca. A.D. 260-270 Roman This highly ornate and extremely well-preserved Roman marble sarcophagus came to the Metropolitan Museum from the collection of the Dukes of Beaufort and was formerly displayed in their country seat, Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England. An inscription on the unfinished back of the sarcophagus records that it was installed there in 1733. In contrast to the rough and unsightly back, the sides and front of the sarcophagus are decorated with forty human and animal figures carved in high relief. The central figure is that of the god Dionysos seated on a panther, but he is somewhat overshadowed by four larger standing figures who represent the four Seasons (from left to right, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). The figures are unusual in that the Seasons are usually portrayed as women, but here they are shown as sturdy youths. Around these five central figures are placed other Bacchic figures and c

The Prophets David and Daniel. Artist: Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, Siegen 1577-1640 Antwerp). Dimensions: 13 7/16 x 11 1/4 in. (34.1 x 28.6 cm). Date: ca. 1601-2.As a young artist in Italy between 1600 and 1608, Rubens ardently copied the works of art he encountered for both study and later reference. When he made this record of Raphael's fresco above the entrance to the Chigi Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria della Pace, Rome, Rubens introduced subtle changes that transformed Raphael's static, planar composition into a more dynamic and forceful scene. He imbued the foreground figures with a greater sense of mass and intensified their expressions to contrast the prophet's formidable wisdom with the scribe's youthful concentration. Rubens never adapted this composition for his own use, but he was strongly influenced by Raphael's imposing treatment of drapery for figures in the religious scenes he painted upon his return to Antwerp. The Boat of Love, 1881. By Dante Gabriel Rossetti.. An illustration of Dante's second sonnet, addressed to Guido Cavalcanti and Lapo degli Ubenti. The picture was commissioned by William Graham in 1873. It was begun in 1874 but abandoned in 1881 because of a disagreement with Graham over terms. Thereafter it remained in the artist's studio until his death, when it was purchased for the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.

Ghetto Nuovo Venice / Cannaregio The ghetto in Venice is located in the Cannaregio district. It was the completed residential area for the Jewish population in Venice since the 1696th century until its abolition in 1796. It is the name of all ghettos of this era. Most of the 286 Jews still living in the Ghetto during fascism were deported by the German occupiers of Italy from 1943 and mostly murdered. The 7 reliefs of the Lithuanian sculptor Arbit Blatas are reminiscent of the victims at the Campo de Gheto Novo 1980.

The Flagellation of Christ ca. 1492-1503 Italian, Milan The inscription at the base of the relief refers to Giovanni Borgia (1446-1503), bishop of Monreale, who was created cardinal in 1492 by his uncle Pope Alexander VI, and the identification is confirmed by the coat of arms painted on the spandrel between the two arches. The high quality of the goldsmith's work has led this pax to be attributed to Caradosso Foppa (ca.1452-ca. 1526). The finial figure and the enameled roundels on the base are later additions..
