Coast Guard Writer Wounded on Luzon. Coast Guardsman Jack Cole, Chief Specialist, of New York City, was wounded as he stepped from a landing barge hitting the beachhead of Luzon on Invasion Day. A jagged piece of shrapnel tore through his right hand. Serving aboard a Coast Guard-manned invasion transport, Cole has "covered" many amphibious operations in the march through the South Pacific toward the Philippines. Here, Coast Guardsman Cole point out Lingayen Gulf, where he was wounded, on a map of the Philippines. In New York City, his home is at 353 East 56th Street.

Coast Guard Invader Awarded Silver Star for Wiping Out Nazi Pill Box. Coast Guard Invader Arthur A. Arnold, of Alexandria, Va., has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action during the Sicilian invasion. The young hero, a veteran of five invasions, who also holds a citation from the British government for gallantry in the Normandy invasion, blew up a Nazi pill box on the Sicilian beach when he "got mad" after his invasion barge was shelled and several of the personnel in his boat killed. One of 16 children, Arnold has two other brothers in the Coast Guard; one in the South Pacific, another a diver.
