Photograph of Fred Nunally and Alfred Schultz, Coast Guard Temporary Reserve, Piloting a Patrol Boat at Night. The duty life of a TR is rugged indeed. They do continuous duty for 24 hours before being relieved. Each member of the Temporary Reserve devotes 52 hours each month to Coast Guard duties. While on duty they are vested with full responsibilities and authority of Coast Guard law enforcement. These men piloting a patrol boat at night, and keeping an alert watch are: Fred Nunally, 1757 Chestnut, Wyandotte, and Alfred Schultz, 3453 Hurlbut, Detroit.

Coast Guard Safety Inspections for Ocean Liners. Commander Paul H. Brown (left), USCG, joins Lieutenant (jg) Frederick O. Wooley below decks to check closure of watertight doors. Here, they seal the door by local control to insure its operation in case of failure of the master control system. As the heavy door slowly meshes closed, a warning alarm sounds in the passageway. The door, which limits flooding to a small controllable area, closes with sufficient force to cut off a stream of flooding mater or cut through debris that might jam in the doorway.
