Rescued By Former U.S. Destroyer -- After they had been sighted by a Coastal Command Sunderland Flying boat, eight members of the crew of a torpedoed Swedish ship were rescued in the Atlantic by one of the destroyers transferred to this country from the United States. The flying boat crow found the lifeboat pushing through a heavy swell with the help of a make-shift sail, over 100 miles from land. They packed food, drink and cigarettes into a water-tight hag attached it to a Mae West life jacket, and dropped it beside the boat. An American-built Lockheed Hudson aircraft of the Coastal Command has helped once again to save the lives of survivors from a torpedoed ship. After several hours search over the Atlantic, the crew of the aircraft sighted three lifeboats rolling in the slight swell of a fairly calm sea. Two of them were full of survivors from a torpedoed ship and included, according to a rough estimate made by the pilot, about twelve women. The third lifeboat was empty, as were several rafts floating nearby.The Hudson flew to a convoy escort vessel some miles away and signaled the position of the lifeboats, then returned to signal to the survivors that help was coming. As soon as the rescue ship had sighted the lifeboats the aircraft resumed patrol. June 17, 1941. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
