The Nativity ca. 1665-70 Bartolomé Estebán Murillo Spanish One of the best known of all Spanish artists, Murillo spent most of his life in Seville, where he established an important drawing school. Many sheets from his hand have survived. This drawing is typical of the finished compositions he made late in his career. It is carefully signed in the lower left, and the letters "fe" after his surname are an abbreviation of the Latin fecit, or "made by." Many of Murillos drawings were preparatory sketches for paintings. Brought up as a Christian, she took a vow of chastity and, on marrying a Roman nobleman, persuaded him to accept sexual abstinence. The drawing may be preparatory for a painting now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, although the angel is absent in the executed version.While this drawing cannot be connected with an executed painting by Guercino, this subject was painted several times by the artist and members of his studio. Date: 1512-13.Dürer created only three prints in the medium of drypoint. Since the other two are dated 1512, this drypoint is presumed to date from the same time. The print was thus produced at the height of the artist's career, just prior to such famous "master prints" as the Melancholia and Knight, Death, and the Devil. Yet the composition harks back to one of the artist's earliest engravings, produced when Dürer was under the influence of the most prolific drypoint artist of the Renaissance, the Housebook Master.Produced by scratching the surface of the metal with a sharp needle, the image has the character of a delicate drawing. With both sites the negs arrived separately from the prints, yet all negs were labelled as Urbino, Palazzo Ducale, making it difficult to match some negatives to their prints.
