Virgin and Child with Saint John Printed 1570-1600 Italy. Diana Mantuano was the only female Renaissance engraver to sign her prints, as well as the only one to be mentioned by Giorgio Vasari in his 1568 Lives of the Artists. Born into an artist family, she learned printmaking by copying the paintings and prints of other artists, including her father, Giovanni Battista Mantuano. She made this engraving in Rome the same year she moved there and received a papal privilege protecting her prints from copyists. Her plates were evidently deemed valuable, as printers kept reprinting them. Miss Cunningham Holding Her King Charles Spaniel 1770 Ireland. A promising artist from the Dublin Drawing Schools, Robert Healy left behind a small but exquisite body of work when he died at age 27. He focused on drawing and pastel and soon became extraordinarily accomplished at making grisaille (monochrome) compositions like this one. The artist completed Miss Cunningham Holding Her King Charles Spaniel near the end of his life, portraying Surgeon General Alexander Cunninghamís daughter. Healyís delicate use of white chalk conveys the girlís youth and innocence; she appears oddly vulnerable against the ominous darkness of the wooded background, alluding to the tensions between humanity and nature embodied in Irelandís history..
