Quillwork hatchment of Dering coat of arms 1731 Possibly made by Mary Dering American Throughout the eighteenth century, members of Bostons newly prosperous merchant class decorated silver, bookplates, coaches, and tombstones with coats of arms to display their heraldic ancestry. Between 1720 and 1740, quillwork coats of arms were popular schoolgirl accomplishments. This lozenge-shaped hatchment was likely created for Henry E. Dering (1684-1750) by one of his daughters, Elizabeth or Mary. Plate five, from A Harlot's Progress Made 1732 England. Hogarth engraved these six copper plates (1964.254ñ59) with a burin, a sharp metal tool used to incise swelling lines directly into a flattened copper surface. He worked in reverse of the final printed images, which were produced by inking the plates and running them through a roller press with dampened sheets of paper on top. The small cross at the bottom of each plate was added when Hogarth issued the second state, released over a decade after the first, much copied edition. Band with Figures 7th-11th century The central panel of this clavus is filled with a lavishly dressed standing male figure, generally described as a saint because of the halo-like semicircles above his head. Behind each of his shoulders is a single figure whose body is partially obscured. Birds and a floral motif fill the surrounding panel; the same floral motif fills the dangling pendant. A highly stylized rinceaux of a straight stem with lozenge-shaped flowers and square leaves forms the border. The jewel-like colors and geometric forms give the textile its relatively late date. A fragment with identical patterns in the collection of the Musée du Louvre, Paris, along with hundreds of fragments with similar figures and motifs preserved in collections throughout the United States and Europe attest to the popularity of this style of tunic decoration during the early Islamic period in Egypt.. Komsomolskaya Metro station in the Krasnoselsky District, Moscow. The station is noted for its being located under the busiest Moscow transport hub, Komsomolskaya Square. the first southern segment of the Koltsevaya line is dedicated to the victory over Nazi Germany, the northern segment is dedicated to the theme of post-war labour. Komsomolskaya, however, is a clear exception: lead designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an illustration of a historical speech given by Joseph Stalin November 7, 1941. In this speech, Stalin evoked the memories of Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy and other military leaders of the past, and all these historical figures eventually appeared on the mosaics of Komsomolskaya.

Pair of Flower Style Doors second half 17th century The flower style associated with the height of Mughal aesthetics and refinement finds expression in this pair of carved wood doors. The depiction of complete flowering plants, carved in low relief and placed in a symmetrical arrangement, is the hallmark of this style, which had its genesis in the reign of the Mughal emperor Jahangir (1605-27). In accordance with their patrons' interests, artists of this period studied European herbals, borrowing the techniques of combining front and side views and infusing the petals and leaves of the plants with a sense of movement. During the reign of Jahangir's son Shah Jahan (1627-58), and especially from the 1630s on, the plant studies were transformed into decorative motifs, arranged in rows to cover textiles, objects, and architectural spaces.
