Farmers' Lives in the Twelve Months late 17th-early 18th century Japan Rice continues to be the main staple of Japanese diet. During the Edo period, rice production became especially significant: feudal lords (daimyō) measured their wealth by it and peasants were required to pay taxes with it.This screen depicts the process of rice cultivation according to the classic Japanese tradition of presenting human activities through seasonal changes. On the farthest right panel, farmers share rice cakes and tea for the New Year in the early spring. The action then progresses from plowing to planting to harvesting, culminating on a snowy day in the winter when the rice is baled and the warehouse filled. These screens offer a rare glimpse into the lifestyles of peasants and demonstrate how daily activities dictated their material needs. The Arms of the Dutch East India Company and of the Town of Batavia by Jeronimus Becx (active c. 1649-1658) oil on panel, 1651. These shields feature the arms of the Dutch East India Company, ornamented with Neptune and a mermaid, and those of Batavia, flanked by Dutch lions. According to the inscription on the latter, the city of Jakarta (now Jakarta) was Conquered on 30 May in the year 1619. The same year Governor-General Jan Pietersz Coen renamed it Batavia and built a castle with dockyards, warehouses and offices.

Fire screen. Culture: German, Würzberg. Dimensions: 58 x 42 1/2 in. (147.3 x 108 cm). Maker: Probably carved by Ferdinand Hundt (ca. 1704-1758). Date: ca. 1736-40.Fire screens have been used since the Middle Ages to shield those standing or seated near a fireplace from the excessive heat of the open flames and from flying sparks. Toward the end of the seventeenth century, screens of rectangular shape with a large central panel of colorful fabric or other boldly contrasting material were developed to conceal the dark opening beneath the mantel that otherwise would interrupt the ornamental dado and paneled decoration of the room.1 The materials used for the frame of these screens ranged from wrought iron or copper to carved wood or even silver, and the panel was often decorated with scenes from the forge of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.2 Especially vulnerable to changing fashions and fire damage, exuberantly carved screens such as the present example have only rarely survived.
