Candlestick With Snuffers; silver, brassPair of candlesticks 1690-91 Jacques Demé These two candlesticks are particularly fine examples of French silver from the close of Louis XIV's reign. Their decorative vocabulary of interlaced strapwork, foliage, and heads in profile is typical of that found throughout French decorative arts of the late seventeenth century, as is the architectural quality of the design. The various motifs call to mind the works of the court designer Jean Bérain (1640-1711), whose many prints and drawings influenced the production of ceramics, furniture, wall paneling, and silver well into the eighteenth century. The candlesticks bear the mark of the silversmith known only by the initials I. D., and the Paris warden's mark of 1690-92. This latter mark indicates that the silver content of the candlesticks met the strict guidelines imposed by the guild. Silver in its pure state is too soft to withstand daily use, so small amounts of copper were added for durability. In the late seventeenth century, thePair of ewers ca. 1815-30 French. Especially unusual is the use of blown Favrile glass for the oil font, as he had only begun experimenting with blown glass a few years earlier. Typical of his inventiveness, the lamp combines materials and exotic patterns (the bronze collar includes an Islamic-inspired design) to produce an object of exquisite richness. The paisley-shape glaze jewels that ornament the scroll feet are elements found in the decorative program Tiffany executed for Louisine and Henry O. Havemeyers house in the early 1890s.Vase China. Dimensions: H. 62 x W. 45 in. (157.5 x 114.3 cm). Date: ca. 1790.Numerous entries in the account book for the period 1748-58 of the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux show that he not only sold, shipped, and installed chandeliers but also took them apart for cleaning or repairs and reassembled them afterward. At times Duvaux would also provide crystal drops, finials, and globes to replace missing ones or mend those that were broken. This may explain why the late eighteenth-century frames of this magnificent pair of chandeliers incorporate earlier crystal pendants in their design. Arranged in three tiers, ropetwisted candle arms alternate with inward-scrolling branches decorated with acanthus leaves, stylized seedpods, and crystal finials. The elaborate model further includes gilt-bronze chains with crystal beads as well as a profusion of crystal drops and balls raining down from the umbrella-shaped row of arms near theCENTRO DE MESA EN BRONCE DORADO CON FIGURAS ALEGORICAS-S XVIII. Date: case ca. 1710, movement ca. 1760-70.Thelot's ancestors were French Huguenots who emigrated from Dijon in 1585. He became one of the most celebrated goldsmiths in Augsburg, a city renowned for its metalwork in silver and silver gilt. The reliefs on this case depict the goddess Venus at her toilette (top), Venus and Diana (right), Venus and Mars (bottom), and Venus at the forge of Vulcan (left). The present quarter-striking movement, with an alarm and a repeating mechanism, is the work of a competent but comparatively unknown clockmaker, and it was probably fitted to this extraordinary case at some time in the second half of the eighteenth century. Such boxes, with their bold moldings and faceted profiles, might have been supplied as part of a large table centerpiece, or surtout. The other components of a surtout include a large central vessel with branches for candles, matching cruets for oil and vinegar, and four spice boxes. The perfectly symmetrical table arrangement emphasized the geometric form of the boxes.
