Antique Golden Watchcases with enamel and diamondy ancient golden watch housing with enamel and diamaireEmbossed wooden wedding chest from North Africa. Dated 18th CenturyOval Silver and Agate Snuff Box, 1900The Stuartska Rosen, "Family Klenod in the Staël von Holstein family. Probably 1600s. NordicDamn in chopped gold, guilloche and enamelled blue, painted enamel: ancient scene. Joseph-Etienne Blerzy (master in 1768). 1778-1779. Paris, Cognacq-Jay museum. This box is of a simple model which seems to have had some success. The background guilloche of parallel wave lines receives the light and nuances the blue of the king of the translucent enamel. The moldings of the lid, the return of the lid and the base of the base, are half-pales in opalescent enamel on the background of Amati gold. Fine gold moldings and white opaque enamel nets highlight them. They also underline the blue panels of the basket, separated by half-grapes in opalescent enamel arranged vertically. The miniature appearing on the lid of this box represents an ancient scene. Its menu drawing and the slightly rosé enamel which covers the painting are quite characteristic of the Geneva enamels (cf. Los Llanos, José de, Grégoire, Christiane, Gold boxes and objects of virtue, Paris, Paris-Musées, 2011, p. 110). Joining fragments of this belt exist in two other museums. The pieces were dispersed almost a century ago, when a Russian scholar claimed the belt along with other Urartian material derived from a site at Gushi on the northwestern shore of Lake Urmia in northwest Iran. The coat of arms of Moscow with a double-headed eagle on the breastplate identifies the owner as Dmitry I, the ill-fated tsar of Russia who falsely claimed to be Ivan the Terribleís lost youngest son. After only 11 months of rule, members of the Russian nobility (boyars) assassinated him and shot the ashes of his body out of a cannon.Dmitry rose to power with Polish support and was heavily influenced by Western taste and politics. This Italian-made armor represents the height of Western fashion and might have been a diplomatic gift. Originally the bands alternated in gold, of which there are only traces now.. These men were identified on their official missions by shield-shaped badges worn on their clothing and displaying the heraldic arms of their employers. In some early examples, these badges were constructed as boxes with lids, probably to store credentials or even small messages on parchment. This brooch is compopsed of a series of arcaded gold cells, linked together to form a star, but its definite horizontal and vertical axes, in fact, make it cross shaped. Because the brooch was buried some gems are missing. Although most of the spaces between the arms of the cross still contain pearls, the arms themselves probably would have been set with amethysts. Raised above the arcaded cluster is an arcaded rotunda that supports a large star-sapphire intaglio. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.Married women were required to cover their hair entirely lest they be considered immodest, therefore headdresses, or kokoshniks were often accompanied by a venchik, Case (Inrō) with Design of Caparisoned Elephant (obverse); Characters in Panel (reverse) 18th-19th century Fangshi Mopu. Numerous items in her collection are composite artifacts made from various cultures and time periods reappropriated as modern jewelry creations by or for Muriel. It is important to note that Newman wore many of the pieces in the collection, interpreting them to suit and express her own singular, often avant-garde style..
