Chasuble and maniple. Culture: European. Dimensions: Length at CB (a): 43 1/2 in. (110.5 cm)(b) with fringe: 34 1/2 in. (87.6 cm). Date: second quarter 18th century.This chasuble and maniple owe their magnificent appearance not only to the sumptuousness of the costly textile from which they are made, but also to the perfectly matched pattern that comprises the chasuble's construction. The complex weave and brilliant color palette of the floral surrounds and blue ombréd satin combine to create a multi-dimensional effect: the blossoms appear to part to reveal an atmospheric and ethereal realm. In contrast to the make-up of many chasubles, here the textile is perfectly matched. The careful arrangement of the orphrey bands and side pieces is a more expensive construction method as it requires more of this expensive fabric to create a symmetrical whole. Birthday or Ceremonial Robe with Crane Medallions. Culture: China. Dimensions: H. 56 in. (142.2 cm). Date: 19th century.Non-official robes such as the example seen here were worn for important family occasions and ceremonies, including weddings and significant birthdays. This robe features eight medallions, each consisting of a stylized crane surrounded by gourd vines. (The motifs repeat in the robe's bands.) Cranes and bottle gourds symbolize longevity and therefore express appropriately auspicious birthday wishes.This robe formed an ensemble with a matching dark blue coat, also in the Museum's collection. The very large sleeves are typical of women's robes in the late Qing dynasty, and the tapestry weave's painted details are also characteristic of the time. Blouse late 19th century Spanish This is from a collection of textiles, regional costume, and related objects originally owned by Morris de Camp (M.D.C.) Crawford, editor of "Women's Wear Daily" from 1915 to 1949, and advisor to the Brooklyn Museum for much of that time. From 1920 to 1929 Crawford collaborated with Stewart Culin, Brooklyn Museum Curator of Ethnology from 1903 to 1929, to unite the fashion industry and museum community in the study of costume and textiles. Crawford believed strongly in the importance of using museum collections for design research, and worked tirelessly to promote this idea both in his work at "W.W.D." and in an advisory capacity with Brooklyn and other museums including the American Museum of Natural History, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. After Culin's death in 1929, Crawford continued to collaborate with other Brooklyn Museum personnel. His work culminated in the opening of the Edward C. Blum Design Laborat

Coat 18th century From the second half of the seventeenth century, womens attire shifted from long, loose garments to tailored coats such as this one. Made of an outer shell of silk and metal-wrapped threads and executed in taqueté , the repeated design of floral sprigs alternates colors of peach and poppy orange. Appliqué forms outline a contrasting floral textile used for the borders. Probably inspired by European dress, the shape of the garment required several small pieces to be stitched together at the hips to form the rounded silhouette.. Coat 450968

Surcoat (Jinbaori) for a Boy. Culture: Japanese. Dimensions: 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 in. (67.3 x 52.1 cm). Date: 18th-early 19th century.Japanese surcoats (jinbaori) for boys are relatively rare (for one other example in the Metropolitan Museum of art see acc. no. 2012.57). In addition, while Chinese silk is sometimes used on the facing of the lapels or for other highlights, it is very unusual to find a surcoat with an exterior made entirely of Chinese silk. The combination of these two traits--a surcoat for a boy made predominantly of Chinese silk--plus the richness of the fabric and its excellent state of preservation, distinguish this surcoat as a very important example.The exterior body of the surcoat is made from one continuous piece of Chinese silk woven with a repeating pattern of six horizontal rows: three rows of five-clawed dragons amid clouds alternating with three rows of Chinese lions and clouds, all on a dark blue ground and highlighted with silver metallic thread. Dalmatic 17th-early 18th century Italian This complete dalmatic (liturgical vestment), tailored in the traditional shape, is made of two dark red silks related in color but patterned in two very different designs, one dating to the seventeenth century and the other to the early eighteenth. The seventeenth-century fabric, used where apparels would normally be attached on the sleeves and the front and back of the garment, has a small repeat pattern of two small-scale floral motifs, one symmetrical, the other asymmetrical, brocaded in gilt metal thread. The later silk, which forms the major part of the garment, features an assymetrical floral and fruit design embellished with patterns in silvered thread.. Dalmatic 461434

Robe (Kosode) with Pine, Ivy, Chrysanthemums, and River mid-19th century Japan This sumptuous robe was made for the young Kyoto noblewoman Yuki-gimi (Princess Yuki), who was the daughter of the twentieth head priest of the influential Higashi Honganji Temple in Kyoto. It is very rare that the name of the original owner of an Edo-period garment is recorded. This kosode is a formal garment featuring the ladys family crest on the back and around the neckline on the front. Its chartreuse ground, which was created using a Western aniline dye, is animated around the hem with vividly colored pine, ivy, and chrysanthemums—all auspicious symbols of longevity and youth that also featured in Japanese literary classics.. Sweater late 17th century European The rare knitted silks of the seventeenth have never been fully explained, but were probably informal wear. Today they could be purposeful as skiwear or underwear, a light sweater, or a chic bodice. Decorated to be seen, these knits are not represented in painting of the period, yet their role was clearly as a comfortable year-round clothing more consequential than any season's novelty.. Cambay (Banyan), anonymous, c. 1710 - c. 1730 Quilted dressing gown of sits painted with multi -colored floral motifs and zigzag lines on red stock, lined with striped silk. The jacket and the accompanying cardigan are probably made in the Netherlands. The lining of the coat of browned, striped side is possible in Haarlem. This city was known for its striped silk fabrics or 'Haarlemse Smallen'. The vest is equipped with a linen back with threader, a method that is unmistakably European and therefore an origin from India seems unlikely. The pattern of the Sits is a gathering of European style elements from different periods in the 18th century, with silk tissues with a so -called lace pattern starting pattern. The closure takes place in the back with a cord and a row of coated nesting holes, which stops at the waist. The back buildings are cut hollow for an outstanding, short lap, which is faintly cut on the bottom. Very wide, smooth sleeves are decorated with a tapered cuff. Warrior's Hat (Jagun), 19th century, Felt, beads, cotton thread and ivory, Nigeria, 19th century, Yorubaland in Nigeria is divided into a dozen kingdoms, one of which is Owo. The Olowo (king) or Owo would wear this headdress along with a matching jacket and skirt as his ceremonial costume. The outfit relates to the chief's military duties, and is also worn by select officials with impressive military records. The ivory feathers on either side, however, distinguish this headdress as belonging to the ruler.

Waistcoat 1780-1800 French Waistcoats and vests of the 18th and 19th centuries served as a layer protection and ornamentation during a period in fashion when the coat was intended to be left open in the front. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. The style of the neck, the length and the hem treatment fluctuated as the tastes changed from over-sized coats of the early 18th century to narrow tightly fitted coats of the late 18th century and onward.The embroidery motifs on this vest depict Aesop's (620-560 BC) tale of "The Wolf and the Crane." The fable, which was re-introduced in the 17th century by Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), contains a wolf that needs assistance removing a bone from his throat with a crane kind enough to assist. Dress, Medium: silk embroidery on cotton foundation Technique: embroidered on plain weave foundation, Long dress of heavy white cotton, straight sleeve, body flares slightly at hem as long, wedge-shaped pieces are sewn in from under arm to hem. Ornamented at the hem with a deep border of embroidery in black, brown, olive green and red. Design is highly stylized: at bottom, solidly worked from 6 3/4 inches in narrow bands of zigzag patterns; above, an arrangement of pillar-like forms and stylized plants, with a plant at the top of each pillar, so that the whole suggests a wall. Chasuble, stole and maniple second quarter 18th century French The textile used in this chasuble, stole, and maniple are from the class of early-18th century silks known as bizarre. Their asymmetrical design placement, exotic imagery and often unusual color combinations were succeeded by more naturalistic floral patterns and the lace meanders and ribbon motifs of the mid-century.. Apron fourth quarter 19th century Hungarian Stewart Culin (1858-1929) was the Brooklyn Museum's first Curator of Ethnology from 1903 to 1929. Culin conducted collecting expeditions, traveling throughout the United States and the world. His goals for these trips were not just to expand the Museum's holdings, but to also provide context for these objects within their cultures. In addition to choosing rare and high-quality pieces, Culin sought artifacts with interesting provenance as well. In 1921 Culin traveled to England, France, Czechoslovakia, and Budapest, Hungary, where he acquired this apron. The beautiful design and color, as well as the integration of sequins and metallic threads create a very effective appearance.
