Waistcoat. Culture: French. Date: 1780-1800.Waistcoats and vests of the 18th and 19th centuries served as a layer protection and ornamentation during a period in fashion when the coat was intended to be left open in the front. The color was often chosen to complement the suit and covered in imaginative embroideries, heavily woven patterns or shiny satins made to draw the eye. The style of the neck, the length and the hem treatment fluctuated as the tastes changed from over-sized coats of the early 18th century to narrow tightly fitted coats of the late 18th century and onward.The embroidery motifs on this vest depict Aesop's (620-560 BC) tale of "The Wolf and the Crane." The fable, which was re-introduced in the 17th century by Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695), contains a wolf that needs assistance removing a bone from his throat with a crane kind enough to assist. The beautiful embroidery is very playful and indicative of the status of the waistcoat as decoration. Museum: Metropolita

Model: The short, straight -cut front of slanted brokaat has a wide neck, one medium seam and splits in the middle and aside. The closure takes place in the back with a cord and a row of coarse nestle holes, which ends at the waist. The backs are cut hollow for an outstanding, short lap, which is slightly cut around on the bottom. Very wide, smooth sleeves are decorated with a tapered cuff. Festival Overcoat 18th century China When the Manchus of the Qing dynasty came into power, they incorporated roundels with dragons into their official court dress, as seen on this woman's coat. This coat, called jifu gua” or longgua”, was designed to be worn over a festival robe. This overcoat is a rare example that can be dated to the early part of the eighteenth century by comparison to garments excavated from the tomb of Prince Guo, who died in 1738. After standardization in the mid-eighteenth century, coats with eight dragon roundels, such as this one, were reserved for the empress dowager, the empress, imperial concubines of the first, second, and third rank, and the consort of the crown prince.. Garment, c. 1890s. Africa, North Africa, Egypt, Aswan, unidentified makers. Silk and mirrored glass; overall: 132.1 x 63.5 x 30.5 cm (52 x 25 x 12 in.). Covered with symbolic decorations, this multitone silk garment beautified and protected its wearer. The khamsah ()—an open five-fingered hand—figures prominently as a cream-colored appliqué. The khamsah deflected or absorbed al-'ayn ()—the evil eye—as did the appliquéd mirrors, shielding the wearer from many varieties of harm. New research connects this garment to an entry in museum founder J. H. Wade’s 1881-1900 travel purchase notebook: “Kalifa’s gown emb[roidered on purple silk.” A caliph (or khalifah) is a leader of a Caliphate (Islamic state) or an Islamic religious group. Whether this was indeed a caliph’s gown is a point of future research.

Date: ca. 1924.In a reference to Persia, Callot Soeurs created a kind of artistic dress of the 1920s, stark in its tubular silhouette but ornamented on the surface. Despite the presence of decoration, for which they were perhaps best known at the time, Callot Soeurs practiced a disciplined modernism. Theatrical jacket with grapevines 18th century China The pattern on this jacketpart of a theatrical costume with skirt 30.76.23 features an amalgam of grapevines and dragons that twists and curves across the white background. You can see one dragon head on the left of the jacket, and another can be found in the center on the back. The quality of both the materials and the workmanship is very high: note the subtle changes in color of the silk embroidery within the leaves and the use of gold thread to delineate the branches, leaves, and tendrils of the grapevine.. Over Robe (Uchikake) with Bamboo first half of the 18th century Gion Nankai Japanese This rare uchikake is the work of Gion Nankai, a well-known poet and painter of the early Nanga (Literati) movement, which had roots in Chinese painting traditions and Confucian studies. Bamboo, vividly painted here in light and dark ink enhanced with a mist of gold powder, was a favored subject of Nanga artists who were largely based in the Kyoto area. Karakane Kry (1675-1738), a merchant and literary scholar from Izumi Sano (present- day Osaka), commissioned this over robe for one of his concubines; it was thereafter treasured as a family heirloom. In 1824, on the occasion of the marriage of one of Kry’s great-granddaughters, the literati poet Rai San’y (1780-1832) wrote a laudatory kanshi (a poem written entirely in Chinese characters) about the unsigned garment, thereby establishing its provenance.. Theatrical robe with eight trigrams China late 19th century This robe features symbols used in Daoist divination, including a black and white roundel (taiji) on the front and back, and eight sets of black trigrams (bagua). A theatrical garment like this was generally worn to play a strategist with magic power. It was used, for example, by an actor playing Zhuge Liang (181-234) from the play Yangping Pass.On view during Rotation 1 of exhibition from June 25, 2016 through January 13, 2017.

Perhaps no other chapter in the long history of American Indian art has such high dramatic appeal than that of the 19th century tribes of the Great Plains. With their bison hunts, mounted raids, beaded garments with flying fringes, war dances, and dangerous adventuresome life, these peoples have assumed in our collective imagination a sense of wild yet disciplined freedom. Yet War Shirts also speak of highly ordered, even regimented, societies with their complex systems of obligations, honors, and rewards. These special symbolic garments appeared by the late 18th century, often reflecting ancient beliefs but taking new formal expression.
