This garment is decorated with seasonal plants, including peonies, plum blossoms, willows, chrysanthemums, narcissuses, and maple leaves. Worn by male actors performing as women, it is normally mostly hidden under a larger karaori layer, which is lavishly decorated with colored, gold, and silver threads.

The neckline, front chest area, and upper back are embroidered in yellow, orange, mint green, blue, tan, and black. The meaning of the four elongated motifs on the front is unclear: while they may be abstract designs, it is also possible that they represent plants and their rootsmaybe the ubiquitous millet or sorghum, both essential to Fulani cuisine.

Noh Costume (Surihaku) with Water, Water Plants, and Leaves 19th century Japan Noh robes patterned with metallic leaf are called surihaku, a term also used for the textiles from which they are made. For this robe, the surihaku textile was decorated by applying paste through stencils, placing and pressing gold leaf onto the still-wet paste and finally, when the paste was dry, brushing away the excess gold leaf. Some surihaku robes have static, repetitive patterns, but the artful arrangement of the stencils for this robe yielded a fluid, rhythmic design.The conventionalized flowing water beneith the plants is sometimes called kanze mizu (literally, "Kanze water"), a pattern associated with the Kanze troupe of Noh actors. Kanze mizu later became the symbol for a particular Kabuki actor, Sawamura Sōjūrō III, who appears wearing clothing patterened with the motif in a woodblock print (JP2720) by Utagawa Toyokuni.. Woman's Robe of State 18th century China Known as chaopao, women's formal or state robes characteristically include an L-shaped seam between the collar and underarm fastenings that were most likely used to attach a long sleeveless coat over the garment.. This robe also features an attached collar, making it a complete set. Surviving examples of women's formal court robes are rare: not many were made, as women were not often included in court ceremonies. The unusual orange-yellow of the robe further indicates its high status. The stiff karaori brocade does not drape easily, but it creates an angular effect, helping to evoke the spirit of a former noblewoman. Jacket with Dragon and Mount Fuji 19th century Japan The dragon is a fantastic animal that originated in China and spread throughout Asia. The dragon on this jacket is seen among clouds and bolts of lightning in a setting rendered specifically and unmistakably Japanese by the presence of Mount Fuji. The jacket may have belonged to a firefighter in the city of Edo (present-day Tokyo), which, owing to climactic conditions and combustible building materials, was especially susceptible to destructive blazes. Some scholars suggest that the patterns on firemen's jackets were selected to provide protection to the firefighter. The clothes they wearshirts, tunics, and capssymbolize their aggressiveness and 'otherness.' In the past, experienced hunters also were leading warriors and strategists. This shirt's cotton is dyed using mud to form the thin, black lines. Traditional elements are the leather strips, mirrors, and little boxes containing quotations from the Qur’an or medicinal plants that have been attached to the shirt, together with teeth, claws and horns of various animal species. Modern elements of the garment include a zipper and plastic button. Usually this kind of garment would be worn for protection during the hunt, but this may be a ceremonial shirt made to honor a particular hunter.
