Combat of the Giaour and the Pasha 1827 Eugène Delacroix French The Oriental subjects of early-nineteenth-century authors provided a source of inspiration for Romantic painters. Lord Byron's Giaour was a favorite of both Gericault and Delacroix. Byron claimed that the tale of a tragic love triangle, involving the Giaour (infidel), the Pasha Hassan, and the Pasha's beautiful concubine, was based on the story of a young Venetian overheard in a Levantine coffee house. Soon after the publication of the French translation in 1823, Delacroix read the poem and noted in his journal the "exchange of two stares, that of the dying man and that of the murderer." This vigorously rendered lithograph captures the confrontation between the Pasha, whose angry stare glazes over as he succumbs, and the Christian, who confronts his own deed with horror.. Prince Henry, Hotspur and Falstaff (Shakespeare, King Henry IV, Part 1, Act 5, Scene 4) first published 1796; reissued 1852 Thomas Ryder I Ryder's battlefield image from King Henry IV, part 1 was conceived for John Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery, launched in 1786 as a publishing-cum-exhibition scheme that included a new illustrated edition of the plays, sets of large and small engravings, and a gallery on London's Pall Mall. The latter opened in 1789 with thirty-four paintings and contained about one hundred and seventy works the time Boydell went bankrupt and auctioned the contents in 1805-his print sales plummeted when Napoleon blocaded European ports. This impression comes from an American reissue of 1852 spearheaded by Shearjashub Spooner, a New York dental surgeon, writer and art scholar who acquired Boydell's heavily worn plates and had them reworked. His New York edition was printed on thick cream paper with small numbers added in the lower left margin, this being number 61.. Pri

Combat Between Giaour and the Pasha Made 1827 France. Like the poem on which it is based, Lord Byronís The Giaour (1813), this print exhibits Europeansí contemporary fascination with the Middle East, a trend known as Orientalism that often depended on stereotypes of violence and sexuality. In the poem, a Venetian giaour (a Turkish term for a non-Muslim) falls in love with Leila, a member of a Turkish harem controlled by the pasha (master), Hassan.
