Maria with child. Maria stands on a pedestal and keeps the child above the right hip.

Catharina. She stands on a soil with the advance of the right leg over the lying Maxentius. In the left hand she carries a beaten book. Her upper body with dependent right arm bends slightly left. The hair fall over back and shoulders. Over a shirt and undergarges, both with V-shaped neck cutting, a robe with rectangular neck cutting and frills at the upper sleeve. From its left shoulder, the jacket runs under the right arm and has been struck to the right. Maxentius with long, braided beard holds it with the right hand, which supports the bottom arm on the ground. He wears a crown and a suit, the sleeves of which are dependent lobes and further splits.

The Sergeant. Artist: Frederic Remington (American, Canton, New York 1861-1909 Ridgefield, Connecticut). Dimensions: 10 3/8 x 5 1/4 x 4 in. (26.4 x 13.3 x 10.2 cm). Date: 1904, cast before 1939."The Sergeant" is Remington's smallest and one of his most commercially successful sculptures. This bust of a mustachioed man would come to have a pendant in "The Savage" (39.65.51a,b) in 1908. Both, miniaturized in scale, represent personality types rather than specific individuals. Portrait figure ca. 1840 Haida, Native American The Haida woman represented in this carved figure wears a pleated cotton dress and holds what appears to be a wafer. In the mid-nineteenth century, Haida men and women made regular journeys to Victoria, British Columbia, five hundred miles south of their homeland on Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. Minnehaha. Artist: Edmonia Lewis (American, 1844-1907). Dimensions: 11 5/8 × 7 1/4 × 4 7/8 in. (29.5 × 18.4 × 12.4 cm). Date: 1868.Like many American sculptors of the nineteenth century, Lewis, an artist of African-American and Chippewa (Ojibwa) ancestry, worked in Rome. Her multiracial identity and her gender were formative in her selection of subjects. In addition to pieces addressing abolition and emancipation, between 1866 and 1872 she completed a series of marble sculptures on the popular theme of Hiawatha and Minnehaha, drawn from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855). The figure can be identified as an artisan by his dress and muscular build. Particularly telling is the pair of wax tablets tucked in his beltthe equivalent of a note padon which he would have written or drawn with a pointed stylus. The portrait is imbued with great psychological power and may represent a famous, even mythological, figure. For example, he may portray the Homeric hero Epeios, who with Athena's help carved the Trojan horse. The retinue comprises five pairs of figures: lokapalas, guardian warriors of Indian Buddhist origin often shown (as here) standing on bulls; earth deities, composite creatures with feline bodies, grotesque heads, flaring wings, and flamelike crests; civil officials; camels; and two exceptionally fine horses. The drip-glaze decoration was applied by a traditional Tang technique called sancai (three color).

Tomb Guardian Figures, early 6th century, 24 in. (60.96 cm), Grey earthenware with traces of pigment, China, 6th century, These guardian figures exhibit the classic elements of the mature Northern Wei style (386-584) including a rigid frontal pose, elongated torso and emphasis on lineal drapery patterns. The facial features are less stylized, however. With active and intent expressions, the heads turn, in contrast to the stiff flat bodies. These figures were unearthed along with two others at the entrance of a Northern Wei tomb in Southern Henan province. The four figures were likely placed against a wall where they functioned as guardians at the tomb door.
