General Guan Yu on Horseback, late 17th century, 9 5/16 x 6 11/16 x 4 in. (23.65 x 16.99 x 10.16 cm), Bronze, silver, China, 17th century, Guan Yu (160-219) was a military general under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and Three Kingdoms period (220-280), and one of the best-known Chinese historical figures throughout East Asia. True accounts of Guan Yus life have largely given way to semifictional ones. He is traditionally portrayed as a red-faced warrior with a long, lush beard. This bronze statue of Guan Yu was sculpted in a popular iconic form of the time: he rides his horse, Red Hare, and likely once held his blade in his right hand (which has gone missing). The rider and horse stand on an oval base with four low feet. His left hand touches his beard (which might have been made of real hair but is now missing). Such a statue, serving as an object of worship, would have been owned by wealthy civilians.

Angel second half 18th century Italian, Naples In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions. Their bodies are made of tow and wire, their arms and legs are finely carved of wood, and their heads and shoulders are modeled of t

Alexander Danilovich Menshikov (1673-1729) probably shortly before 1704 Unknown Finely detailed armor, a fluttering jabot, and an extravagantly combed wig set off the smoothly burnished face of the military commander portrayed in this wooden bust. His direct gaze is emphasized by the scooped truncation of his cuirass, which slices aggressively forward beneath it. The head turns slightly, against the flow of the lace cravat, imparting a sense of movement. Beneath the soft elements of lace and hair, sharply engraved images appear on the breastplate. The enwreathed ovals have been identified as scenes of Alexander the Great and his close friend Hephaestion at the tent of King Darius (to the viewers left) and the Justice of Trajan (slightly obscured, to the viewers right). Medallions on the pauldrons of Alexander the Great (left) and of the emperor Trajan (right) repeat the principal military figures seen in the ovals. Mrs. Stanford White (Bessie Springs Smith) 1884, carved by 1888 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Saint-Gaudens completed this portrait of Bessie Smith White (1862-1950) on the occasion of her marriage to the architect Stanford White in 1884. Modeling the portrait was the sculptors gift to the couple, and he then funded its translation to marble to settle a debt with White. Bessie White is depicted in her bridal ensemble, brushing aside the flowing veil and holding rose blooms symbolizing love and beauty. By the mid-1880s, Saint-Gaudenss style of relief sculpture was more technically ambitious, incorporating passages of low and high relief, ranging from the sketchy veil to the deeply undercut chin. The tabernacle frame with a scrollwork and floral pattern was designed by White.. Mrs. Stanford White (Bessie Springs Smith) 12013

Two Unidentified Young Men.There is a striking resemblance between the features of these two young men. They are probably brothers. The oldest (at right) is possibly a soldier or a member of a militia company. The gesture he makes with his fingers is curious. It may represent a measure, in which case he is advocating temperance. The jutting out of the young mens elbows carved in high relief is artistically daring.

Figure from a Crèche, 1780-1830. Italy, Naples, late 18th-early 19th century. Painted wood and terracotta with various textiles; overall: 31.4 cm (12 3/8 in.). The practice of creating scenes of the Nativity for the home dates from the early 1700s in Italy, where people began to set up doll-like figures of about a foot or less in height. The custom was particularly popular in Naples around 1800, where crèche scenes (crèche means cradle, or crib) included many figures, whose heads and hands of painted terracotta, stuffed cloth bodies, and clothing adapted from contemporary local costumes gave them an amazingly realistic character.

Turk and camel (representing Asia) (part of a set) 1755-70 probably French, Niderviller Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. While faience can be created from a wide mixture of clays, it is foremost distinguished by the milky o

Lohan Holding a Peach; Lohan Holding a Fu Dog, 1662-1722. China, Jiangxi province, Jingdezhen kilns, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), Kangxi reign (1662-1722). Porcelain with famille verte overglaze enamel decoration; overall: 24.3 x 12.6 cm (9 9/16 x 4 15/16 in.). These two lohans, disciples of Buddha with supernatural powers, were perhaps part of a house altar set or a decorative item in a household. Lohans, also known as arhats, are said to be able to tame tigers and tread on water. Here they are shown as monklike figures, one holding the peach of immortality, the other a fu-dog. The lohan with a bald head wears a monks robe made of patches. These two figures embody a humorous attitude and playful behavior, indifference to danger and miracles, and hence a detachment from worldly affairs.During the 1600s, porcelain sculptures decorated in famille verte overglaze enamel colors were produced for the domestic as well as export market to Europe.
