The Jin dynasty, distinguished as the Sima Jin and Liang Jin, was a Chinese dynasty, empire, and era traditionally dated from 265 to 420 CE. It was founded by Sima Yan, son of Sima Zhao who was made Prince of Jin and posthumously declared the founder of the dynasty. The Western Wei followed the disintegration of the Northern Wei, and ruled northern China from 535 to 557 CE. As with the Northern Wei state that preceded it, the ruling family of Western Wei were members of the Tuoba clan of the Xianbei.

Womans blouse (Huipil), c. 1930, 22 1/4 x 39 11/16 in. (56.52 x 100.81 cm), Cotton, silk; discontinuous supplementary weft patterning, Mexico, 20th century, Mayan huipiles are silent but eloquent expressive forms that convey multiple meanings. They are the principal medium through which community and individual identity is transmitted and constructed. In the late nineteenth century, Mayan villages officially adopted community-based styles of dress, reflecting local weavers' technical proficiency, aesthetic sensibility, and unique perception of color. While Mayan men adopted Western dress in increasing numbers, Mayan women continued to wear the traditional blouse (huipil) and skirt (corte) of their ancestors, embellished in the readily identifiable style of their community.

The dragon exists in Tibetan mythology either as a wood dragon or, more usually, in its more spectacular form as a thunder dragon. It is often portrayed in flight on Tibetan rugs and carpets with a depiction of stylized clouds. They are called brug or thunder dragons.

Abruzzo Chieti Chieti S. Tommaso Apostolo, Cathedral0. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Cathedral was begun in 840, and building continued in the 11th cent. It was reconstructed in the 14th cent. The interior underwent a radical restoration in the 18th cent. in the Baroque style. The campanile was built in 1335. Photos include exterior views of the facade and the campanile along with several details. The interior views show the Baroque nave with its vaults and cupola. There are paintings in the vaults and over the altars, including one of St. Thomas & Christ over the main altar. There are also photos of the marble paliotto in front of the altar (17th cent.). Other interior details are the baptismal font, a wooden statue of the Madonna & Child, and wooden statues of two saints, one St. Peter. Star Mandala 13th-14th century Japan An understanding of the impact of celestial bodies on human activity was crucial to early East Asian Esoteric Buddhism; by the tenth century, complex star mandalas unique to Japan were being devised and used in rites for the prevention of natural calamities and epidemics as well as for the prolonging of life.Five concentric circles and an external ring of figures form this star mandala. The Buddha Shakyamuni of the Golden Wheel occupies the central circle, while the disks in the second circle represent the Big Dipper. The third and fourth circles contain the Nine Luminaries (including Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, the sun, and the moon) as well as the lunar nodes (Rag and Ket) and the twelve zodiac symbols. In the fifth circle are the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, the constellations through which the moon travels. Triptych of White-robed Kannon, Kanzan, and Jittoku 14th century Unidentified artist The central figure in this triptych represents the White-robed Kannon, a form of the compassionate bodhisattva Kannon that was popular in Zen Buddhism. As is usual with this subject, the bodhisattva is shown seated on a rocky promontory above a body of water, surrounded by a halo-like radiance. An overhanging branch and hints of a rocky ravine in the background are suggested by soft, washy ink brush strokes. The two disheveled, somewhat wild-looking figures in the paintings flanking the Kannon are Kannon and Jittoku, two quasi-historical eccentrics from Zen legend. All three figures were popular subjects for Zen-inspired ink monochrome painting in JapanThis type of composition for the White-robed Kannon derived from Chinese ink paintings on the subject that came to Japan along with Zen Buddhism in the 14th century. Scenes of the Buddhist Hell second half of the19th century Shsai This dynamic painting depicts the Buddhist hell. Most of the composition shows detailed descriptions of the types of suffering that await souls reborn in hell, with an array of punishments meted out by large, muscular, half-nude demons with red or green skin. In the upper left corner, for example, two nude figures on a platform attempt to escape as a green-skinned demon beats them. Nearby, another hapless soul is bound upside-down to a tree, watching in horror and awaiting his own punishment. Elsewhere, demons march lost souls into a pool of molten lava. A scene in the bottom third of the picture shows a group of nude children in a graveyard, some attempting to escape from an approaching demon while others beg for mercy from Jiz (Ksitigarbha in Sanskrit), a benevolent Buddhist deity associated with rescuing suffering souls, who appears here in the guise of a monk with a walking staff. The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century.

Gathering Herbs, 1612, Xie Daoling, Chinese, active early 17th century, 77 9/16 x 22 9/16 in. (197.01 x 57.31 cm) (image), Ink and color on paper, China, 17th century, Attended by a servant carrying a basket of herbs, a scholar pauses on a bridge beneath a pine tree and gazes upward toward his destination, a monastery visible in the mists of a distant valley. Gathering herbs was a favorite scholarly pastime, as it provided an excuse to interact with nature, which in itself could be a meditative process. More significantly it was a practice pursued by both Daoists and Buddhists, reflecting the idea of sacred mountains as places where potent alchemy could be practiced and meditative refuge achieved. The mountains also offered the opportunity to encounter immortal beings and therefore a path to transcendence.

In this painting, Our Lady of Pomata is depicted as a statue--a carved figure crowned and dressed in lavish garments and adorned with precious materials--that stood on the side altar of the parish church. This type of iconic image, found throughout Latin America, is known as a statue painting. A rosary encircles the hands of the Virgin, who holds a tiny doll-like Child Jesus, also crowned and finely dressed. Christ as judge; Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Thuringia, mother of a thirteenth-century abbess of Altenberg; and Saint Nicholas, patron saint of the convent, are among the other figures represented in richly textured embroidery. Volume from the Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, late 1100s. Japan, Heian period (794-1185). Handscroll; ink and gold on dyed paper; This scroll is part of the 600-volume Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra. The sacred text addresses the perfection of wisdom and the nonsubstantiality of all phenomena, or the emptiness of all things. It takes the form of Shakyamuni Buddhas preaching at four locations. This scroll is from the Perfection of Wisdom in 100,000 Lines, which occupies the first 400 volumes. At one time, religious clergy kept all the scrolls in a lacquered wood repository on view nearby. They are now too fragile to open and we will conserve them over time.

According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials.
