Reliquary 18th century Portuguese The cult of relics was an integral part of Catholic devotion from early in the Christian era. Relics of the Passion of Christ (the events leading up to the Crucifixion), as well as those associated with numerous saints and martyrs, were prized by churches and pious individuals throughout western Europe and Byzantium. Believers in the miraculous power of relics promoted a sumptuous form of artwork by commissioning resplendent cases to surround the often miniscule fragments. Sometimes the framework would echo the source of the relic (an arm, a foot, a head). In other instances, relics were preserved in containers of more traditional form. Jewels containing relics served as gestures of piety as well as displays of personal wealth. Such devotional ornaments became especially popular in early-seventeenth-century Spain, where sumptuary laws restricted most nonreligious personal adornment. Many of the most elaborate works produced by goldsmiths and jewelers w

(Kimono-Shaped Coverlet (yogi)), early 1900s, Unknown Japanese, 67 x 60in. (170.2 x 152.4cm), Cotton, Japan, 20th century, A fanciful type of bed covering in Japan, called yogi (literally 'night clothes') consists of a quilted blanket in the shape of a kimono. Heavily padded with cotton wadding, the yogi was spread over the sleeper, decorative back side up, and the collar tucked snugly under the chin and shoulders. As part of a bridal trousseau, they were sometimes decorated with the groom's family crest. In this case, the crest consists of three oak leaves. The bottom of the blanket is decorated with a pattern of pine branches and folded paper cranes--both symbols of longevity.

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist Nardo di Cione (Italian, Florentine, active 1343-1356/1366). Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist, mid 14th century. Tempera and tooled gold on panel, 77 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (196.9 x 100.3 cm). In 1348, the bubonic plague killed more than half the population of Florence, causing profound social, economic, and psychic devastation. In the plagues aftermath Nardo di Cione painted this large altarpiece, likely for the Duomo, the most important church in the city. There is a red and white banner near Jesus, who holds a bird in his hand; both are symbols of the Resurrection, his future triumph over death. For devout Christian survivors of the pandemic, this would have been a powerful image of salvation. The Duomo housed the relics of two of the saints depicted here: Zenobius (upper left), the first Bishop of Florence, and the city

The entire Tipitaka Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism is set on 729 marble slabs, each with 80 to 100 lines of text, originally in gold ink, on both the obverse and the reverse sides. Each stone is three and a half feet wide, five feet tall and five inches thick and housed in a kyauksa gu or a small cave-like stupa. Kuthodaw Pagoda, literally meaning Royal Merit Pagoda, and formally titled Mahalawka Marazein, is a Buddhist temple and stupa located in Mandalay, central Burma. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon (180878). The stupa itself, which is gilded above its terraces, is 57 m (188 ft) high, and is modelled after the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U near Bagan. In the grounds of the pagoda are 729 'kyauksa gu' or stone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the Tipitaka, the entire Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The stone inscriptions are considered to be the largest book in the
