The Last Communion of Saint Jerome. Artist: Botticelli (Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi) (Italian, Florence 1444/45-1510 Florence). Dimensions: 13 1/2 x 10 in. (34.3 x 25.4 cm). Date: early 1490s.The great fourth-century scholar and translator of the Bible into Latin is shown in his cell near Bethlehem, supported by his brethren as he receivies Last Communion. Famous in its day, the picture was painted for the Florentine wool merchant Francesco del Pugliese, a supporter of the radical preacher Savonarola. An opponent of the Medici, Pugliese may have been attracted to the subject for its deeply devotional content. The period frame was carved in the workshop of Giuliano da Maiano; the lunette is by Bartolomeo di Giovanni, who sometimes collaborated with Botticelli. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Birth and Naming of Saint John the Baptist; (reverse) Trompe-l'oeil with Painting of The Man of Sorrows. Artist: Bernard van Orley (Netherlandish, Brussels ca. 1492-1541/42 Brussels). Dimensions: 25 x 30 in. (63.5 x 76.2 cm). Date: ca. 1514-15.This panel once formed the left wing of an altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Baptist that was commissioned by abbot Jacques Coëne for the Benedictine Abbey Church in Marchiennes, near Tournai. It depicts Saint Elizabeth in bed, shortly after giving birth to the newborn saint. Zacharias appears at the entrance to her room, carrying a scroll which declares his son's name will be John. The pendant (in a private collection) shows the moment after the Baptist's death, when Salome receives his head on a platter. The centerpiece of the triptych, likely a sculpture of the Baptism of Christ, has not survived. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Bernard Van Orley.

Madonna and Child Enthroned. Artist: Carlo Crivelli (Italian, Venice (), active by 1457-died 1495 Ascoli Piceno). Dimensions: 38 3/4 x 17 1/4 in. (98.4 x 43.8 cm). Date: 1472.These three panels are from an altarpiece painted for a Dominican church in the Marchigian town of Ascoli Piceno. It is possible that the child was originally shown reaching for a flying bird, his frequent attribute. The cracked marble dais is a recurrent feature of Crivelli's work. On it are two pears, symbolic of the Fall of Man, and a fly, conceivably an emblem of Satan. Crivelli loved visual tricks, and the shadow cast by the fly gives a disturbingly realistic quality.Saint George (fourth century) is shown in contemporary, fifteenth-century armor with the dragon he slew. For more information about these paintings, including a reconstruction of the altarpiece, visit metmuseum.org. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Adoration of the Christ Child 1510-1520 Netherlands. According to tradition, the birth of Christ took place in a stable constructed in the ruins of King Davidís palace in Bethlehem. In Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanenís painting, the garlands and scrollwork of the architecture and the tumbling musical angels demonstrate an exuberant adaptation of Renaissance motifs to an essentially late medieval scene. Jacob Cornelisz. was the first major painter established in Amsterdam. The importance of this city in the northern portion of the Netherlands increased dramatically over the course of the 16th century.. Oil on panel . Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen

The Resurrection Perugino (Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci) Italian This exceptionally well-preserved picture and four others in the Art Institute of Chicago formed the base (predella) of an altarpiecepossibly the large Crucifixion in the church of Sant'Agostino, Siena. In 1502 a contract was signed with Perugino, who had been recommended as "the best painter in Italy." An attractive feature of the present picture is the feigned frame lit from the left..
