Date: 1470-1480.Cartapesta (papier-maché) was an inexpensive and widely used medium for sculpture in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Due to its inherent fragility, few examples survive. This relief includes a playful detail embraced by artists working in other media as well: as the kneeling king touches the baby Jesus, the child reaches for his beard and grasps a tuft of hair on his balding pate. Madonna and Child with Angels. Artist: Pietro di Domenico da Montepulciano (Italian, Marchigian, active first quarter 15th century). Dimensions: Overall, with engaged frame, 34 5/8 x 26 1/4 in. (87.9 x 66.7 cm); painted surface 30 5/8 x 22 1/4 in. (77.8 x 56.5 cm). Date: 1420.This exquisite painting is notable for the refinement of its tooled and freehand work on the gold ground. The picture alludes to the Madonna's humility (she is seated on grass), and to her roles as Queen of Heaven (the angels tooled into the gold background suspend a crown over her) and the beloved enclosed in a garden. She unveils her sleeping child--an allusion to his future sacrifice and death. It is one of the finest works by Pietro di Domenico, who was active in the region of the Marches. Exceptionally, the picture survives intact with its original engaged frame decorated with a continuous flower pattern and the artist's signature. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Oriental carpets more than two centuries old have rarely survived and are rarely represented in Islamic Art since Sunni Islam (and to a lesser extent Shia) eschews representational art in favour of precisely the repetetive geometric symbols and arabesques found, for example, in oriental carpets. This means that most examples of 17th century and earlier oriental carpets, mainly produced in Muslim lands, are only to be found in paintings from Christian lands where rich oriental carpets were associated with wealth, power and taste. Such carpets featured as an important decorative feature in paintings from the 14th century onwards, leading to the dichotomy that there are more depictions of oriental carpets produced before the 17th century in European paintings than there are actual oriental carpets surviving from the same period. Because of this European paintings have proved an invaluable source of reference for the study of the history of carpetmaking and carpets.

Salvator Mundi ca. 1622-23 Domenico Fetti Italian In his use of textured brushstrokes and illusionistic devices, in this painting Fetti pays a sort of homage to the great sixteenth-century painter Correggio. Note how Christs gaze is directed down at the viewer and how playfully the puttis heads peek out from Christs robe or support his extended foot. Following a fight with a fellow painter, Fetti moved from Mantua to Venice, where he executed this painting for Count Francesco Gambara of Brescia.. Salvator Mundi 438169

The Virgin Adoring the Host. Artist: Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres (French, Montauban 1780-1867 Paris). Dimensions: 15 7/8 x 12 7/8 in. (40.3 x 32.7 cm). Date: 1852.This small, jewel-like devotional painting was made as a gift for Ingres's friend Louise Marcotte, who introduced the artist to Delphine Ramel, whom he married in 1852. The Raphaelesque composition is based on one Ingres first painted in 1841 for the future czar Alexander II, which includes the two patron saints of Russia, Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas (Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow). For this version, Ingres replaced the Russian saints with two French ones. He would go on to paint four more variants, as well as, in 1855, a watercolor for Madame Ingres herself (Fogg Museum, Cambridge, Mass.). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
