Behold now Behemoth which I made with thee, 1825, William Blake, British, 1757-1827, 8 1/2 x 6 5/8 in. (21.59 x 16.83 cm) (sheet, mount), Engraving, England, 19th century, Here, God explains the mystery of the incessant warfare in the human world. He reaches down through the cloud-barrier with his left hand to indicate Behemoth and Leviathan. These two creatures exist in man himself; God proclaims to Job 'Behold now Behemoth which I made with thee.' (Job xl: 15-24; lxi: 1-34). The cloud-barrier of Job's world includes the sphere in which they exist; it is a picture of the subconscious, the unredeemed portion of psyche, which the bulrushes identify as Egypt-the unredeemed portion of mankind. These are the terrible forces within man, against which he seems helpless: 'the War by Sea enormous and the War by Land astounding, erecting pillars in the deepest Hell to reach the heavenly arches' (Blake, Jerusalem, 91: 39-42). They also function as a means of God's providence.

"Buy From Us With a Golden Curl," for "The Goblin Market" 1861-62 Dante Gabriel Rossetti In August 1861, Rossetti proposed to the publisher Alexander Macmillan that he create a "brotherly design for a frontispiece" to a volume of poems by his sister Christina. The drawing was finished by mid-December but it took until April 1862 Charles Faulkner's related wood engraving to be completed and published. The fairytale-like imagery echoes the related verse, which tells how goblins offer two sisters magic fruit, a food that symbolizes temptation. The artist shows the plainly dressed Lizzie walking uphill at upper right as Laura, in a patterned gown, kneels in the foreground and clips a lock of her luxurious hair to pay the animal-headed goblins crowded at left. The poem dramatically details how Laura's subsequent cravings bring her close to death, and how Lizzie's resistance enables her to confront the goblins and save her sister.. This book illustrates seventeen great warriors from Japan's medieval era. Fantastic legends about them were adapted to the Kabuki stage during the Edo period. This scene depicts the 14th century warrior O_mori Hikoshichi fighting with demons. As a retainer of the great warlord Ashikaga Takauji (1305-1358), Hikoshichi joined the rebellion against emperor Godaigo and ultimately cornered and killed his fiercest general, Kusunoki Masashige (1294-1336). After the battle, Hikoshichi discovers Masashige's ghost has returned to haunt him. 'A Way of Flying' from the 'Disparates' (Follies / Irrationalities) ca. 1815-16 (published 1864) Goya (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes) Spanish In one of the most striking prints from the series, five men wearing helmets in the shape of a birds head fly aided by wings strapped to their wrists and feet. The image has been interpreted as a metaphor of the latest political and philosophical currents, which were opposed by the most conservative sectors of Spanish society.
