Over-life-sized marble portrait, probably of the empress Sabina. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 121-128.This imposing head probably comes from a statue of Sabina, wife of the emperor Hadrian. The face was originally surmounted by a very high, ovoid hairpiece covered with small curls, a style that was fashionable at the court of Trajan in about A.D. 100.The upper part of the hairpiece was carved separately and added onto the shelf-like area above the forehead. In back, the hair is arranged like that of a classical statue of Venus, goddess of love, with long locks falling forward over the shoulders. Sabina, grandniece of the emperor Trajan, was married to Hadrian, his ward and protégé, in A.D. 100. It is unlikely that an over-life-sized statue of the girl would be commissioned in the years before A.D. 117 when Hadrian became emperor, but it must have been carved fairly soon after, given the high hairpiece that was already out of style. The Tiber Muse, 2nd-1st century BCE, 47 x 13 x 24 in. (119.38 x 33.02 x 60.96 cm), Marble, Italy, 2nd-1st century BCE, Although discovered in the vicinity of the Tiber river in Rome in 1885, the style of this statue's drapery suggests that it originated in a workshop in Greece or Asia Minor. The Roman importation and copying of Greek sculpture are well documented, from the time of the Roman conquests of Greeks territories in the third century B.C. and throughout the imperial era (27 B.C.-about 395 A.D.). The public exhibition of Greek spoils encouraged Romans to collect Greek art and commission new works in similar styles. Displaying statuary of Greek origin or appearance eventually became a mark of one's social status and education.

Tufa head of sphinx or siren ca. 550-525 B.C. Etruscan, probably Vulcian This large head, made of volcanic stone, probably represents a sphinx or siren. Statues of both mythical creatures, usually depicted by the ancients with human female heads and winged animal or bird bodies, were often placed as guardians near the entrances to Etruscan tombs. The large winged lion on display in this gallery is a better preserved example of this type of stone sculpture. The style of this female head, with its almond-shaped eyes, Archaic smile, and wig-like hair arrangement is strongly reminiscent of Greek, especially Ionian examples. A number of related sculptures, all associated with ancient tombs at Vulci, are in other collections. One of the closest parallels for the Museum's head is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.. Fragment of the marble stele (grave marker) of a youth. Culture: Greek, Attic. Dimensions: H. preserved 48 in. (121.9 cm). Date: ca. 530 B.C..A nude image of the deceased youth projects in high relief from the concave, red background. He stands erect, left foot forward, in the same position as the nearby three-dimensional statue of a kouros (youth). The stele is carved in a marble with gray striations that was quarried at Mount Hymettos, just outside of Athens. Two more fragments of this stele have recently been identified in Athens - one with the left hand, the other with the chest and upper arm. Marble head of a Greek general 1st-2nd century A.D. Roman Copy of a Greek bronze statue of the middle of the 4th century B.C.This powerful portrayal of a man of action belongs to a type popular in Roman times. One suggestion for his identity is the strategos (general) Phokion, pupil of Plato and one of the foremost Athenian statesmen of the fourth century B.C., but there is little evidence to support that theory. We do not know if the original statue was a contemporary portrait, like the famous fifth-century portrait of the Athenian statesman and general Perikles, or a posthumous work. It could even be a representation of a hero from the mythic past. He wears a Corinthian helmet pushed up and resting on the back of his head. The helmet is elaborately decorated in relief with griffins on the bowl and rams heads on the cheek pieces and is similar to a type worn by the goddess Athena.
