Marble statue of Aphrodite 2nd century B.C. Greek The goddess of love stands in an exaggerated hipshot pose. She wears a thin chiton girded just below the breasts, and her himation (cloak), which must have been draped over the missing left arm, falls in thick folds between her legs. This figure is one of the many variants created in the Hellenistic period of a statue type known as the Tiepolo Aphrodite. Partial female head 400-200 B.C. Late Period-Ptolemaic Period Small Late Period and Ptolemaic reliefs or sculptures that depict a subject in a partial or unfinished way but are themselves finished objects constitute a special class of object. Guidelines like those for artists are often prominently exhibited as part of the object, although, in fact, many instances can be noted where the object simply could not serve as a suitable model for a traditional formal Egyptian representation. Personifications of kingship, figures that may represent the now emerging demigods Imhotep and Amenhotep Son of Hapu, and popular gods like Harpokrates or Isis, are heavily represented within the corpus. Taken together, the figures represented and the other features indicate the reliefs and sculptures of this class, sometimes called by Egyptologists "sculptors models / votives," were the material of a donation practice, perhaps connected with the prolific temple building of these centuries. Roman, Cypriot Only one other funerary cippus of this type is known, but the conventions used are similar to those of Egyptian painted portraits. The woman portrayed here is named in the Greek inscription as Kratea. In an attempt to capture her individuality, she is represented with rather bony and irregular features, and her hair is parted down the middle, a convention that seems to imply that she was elderly. Marble statue of a member of the imperial family 27 B.C.-A.D. 68 Roman This statue and the similar work, 2003.407.9 were probably part of a statuary group portraying and honoring members of the Julio-Claudian dynasty that ruled Rome from the time of Augustus to that of Nero. The stance of these partially nude figures brings to mind the canonic works of Polykleitos, one of the most famous Greek sculptors of the fifth century B.C., and was almost certainly intended to give a heroizing aura to the statues. It has been argued that the draping of the mantle around the hips and over the arm was a specific iconographic indication that the individual being honored was already deceased. Head of a Bearded Man ca. 1160-70 French This finely carved head comes from the lintel of the north transept portal (Porte des Valois) of the abbey church, which depicted the martyrdom of Saint Denis, France's patron saint. Although the portal was carved 1160-70, it was erected in its present location in the thirteenth century. Parts of it were damaged in the wake of the French Revolution. The close stylistic resemblance to the column figure from the cloister (displayed nearby) suggests that both were products of the same workshop.. Head of a Bearded Man 470392

The relief depicts the upper body of a beardless man in high relief who faces directly toward the viewer. A trace of his garment remains at the left shoulder, suggesting it may have been a Greek cloak known as a himation. The background of the relief has been broken away on the left side, but was likely inscribed in Palmyrene Aramaic with the name and lineage of the deceased. The intensity of his gaze is emphasized by the large size of his eyes, and the concentric circles indicating the iris and pupil of each eye.
