Madame du Barry (1746-1793) 1772 Sèvres Manufactory French Sèvres employed many of the most famous French sculptors of the day to produce terracotta or plaster models that could be reproduced in biscuit porcelain. Many of these models were reductions of large-scale sculptures, usually in marble, that had met with critical success. In this instance, the sculptor Pajou created an entirely new model rather than copy the lifesize terracotta bust of Madame Du Barry he had executed two years before.. Mask of a man with loose hair combed forward and a mantle A.D. 120-150 Roman Period The plaster masks derive from pharaonic traditions, in which the mask served as a substitute for the head of the deceased and as a means of elevating him or her to immortal status. The derivation is often reflected in paintings and texts located on the mantle surrounding the head. Like the painted mummy portraits, the masks suggest strongly individualized appearances and affect Roman fashions in hairstyle, jewelry, and dress. They follow, however, a somewhat different pattern. For example, female masks may have coiffures that combine Roman arrangements of the upper part of the hair with long corkscrew locks that were considered typically Egyptian. Despite the seeming individuality of the masks, most faces were made in a mold. Distinguishing details were worked in the plaster with a spatula or knife. The ears were added separately, and sometimes eyes were inlaid with glass or stone. The mask was then fre

Ferdinando de' Medici (1663-1713), Grand Prince of Tuscany ca. 1680-82 Giovanni Battista Foggini Italian These meltingly carved busts of father (1993.332.1) and son are surely the finest examples of the portrait style of G. B. Foggini, the leading sculptor of the Florentine Baroque. While strong echoes of Bernini date the creation of the pair to shortly after the younger artist's return from Rome, they already exhibit Foggini's talent for the depiction of material opulence that earned him the post of Medici court sculptor. Dynamic contrasts abound: the fragile lace cravats and lavish mantles (emulating modes of the contemporary French court) set off the realistically depicted faces. They in turn provide their own study in contrasts: the commanding pose and classic Habsburg physiognomy of the balding father serve as counterpoint to the sweet, somewhat unformed face of the youth, overwhelmed by a delirious cascade of curls. Foggini's artistic genius inaugurated the final flourish of Medi

Steelyard Weight with the Bust of Athena. Culture: Byzantine. Dimensions: 8 × 3 15/16 × 3 1/8 in., 9.6 lb. (20.3 × 10 × 7.9 cm, 4345g). Date: 350-500.A number of weights like this one survive from the late antique period. Weights were calibrated to specific standardized measurements. They were hung from hooks on one end of a balance to counter whatever goods were weighed on the other side. Bronze weights in the forms of courtly and mythological women are fairly common. The survival of classical subjects, such as Athena here, shows the pervasive taste for antiquity well into the early Byzantine period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Mirror Box with Head of Athena, 400-375 BC. Greece, early 4th Century BC. Bronze, partially gilt; diameter: 11.3 cm (4 7/16 in.). These case or box mirrors, constructed just like modern, hinged makeup compacts, were very fashionable from the later 5th century into the 4th century. The decoration of the cover was always in repoussé. Frequently there was another disk within this cover with an incised decoration of a mythological figure. The actual mirror is the highly polished top of the bottom half of the box. A loop at the hinge allowed the mirror to be suspended as a wall decoration when not in active use.

Fragment of a Funerary Lekythos (Monument in the Shape of an Oil Jar) 400 BCE-301 BCE Athens. This fragment comes from a large tombstone in the shape of a lekythos, a small terra-cotta jar of oil that was often left at a grave as a gift. Inscriptions indentify the three figures. To the left stands Leon, further identified as coming from Halai (located between Athens and Cape Sounion). He is bearded and wears a long himation, or mantle. He clasps hands with, and gazes at, Demagora, the fully clad woman seated before him. Presumably she is his wife, and the similarly clad girl standing behind her is their daughter, Helike, who watches the couple bid eternal farewell, although it is uncertain which of them has died. Only prominent families such as this one had the means to commission such grave monuments on which they could immortalize loved ones by having their names set in stone.. Marble . Ancient Greek
