STS003-010-613 (22-30 March 1982) --- A truly remarkable view of White Sands and the nearby Carrizozo Lava Beds in southeast NM (33.5N, 106.5W). White Sands, site of the WW II atomic bomb development and testing facility and later post war nuclear weapons testing that can still be seen in the cleared circular patterns on the ground. Space shuttle Columbia (STS-3), this mission, landed at the White Sands alternate landing site because of bad weather at Edwards AFB, CA.

AS09-26A-3802A (12 March 1969) --- Color infrared photograph of the Globe, Arizona area, including Roosevelt Lake and San Carlos Reservoir, taken on March 12, 1969, by one of the four synchronized cameras of the Apollo 9 Earth Resources Survey SO65 Experiment. At 11:29 a.m. (EST) when this picture was made the Apollo 9 spacecraft was at an altitude of 119 nautical miles, and the sun elevation was 38 degrees above the horizon. The location of the point on Earth's surface at which the four-camera combination was aimed was 33 degrees 42 minutes north latitude, and 103 degrees 1 minute west longitude. The other three cameras used: (B) black and white film with a red filter; (C) black and white infrared film; and (D) black and white film with a green filter.

Payun Matru is a large shield volcano capped by a caldera (right half of image), located in the Andean Volcanic Belt in Argentina. Nearby to the south is the high compound volcano Payun; to the west is a field of cinder cones and lava flows. The most recent volcanic activity occurred about 500 years ago. The image was acquired March 1, 2009, covers an area of 46.7 by 53.1 km, and is located at 36.4 degrees south, 69.3 degrees west.

The volcano lies due south of Guadalajara and Lake Chapala. It is considered to be one of Mexico's most active and most dangerous volcanoes, lying not far from heavily populated areas.

On September 24 at 11 29 GMT, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck in south-central Pakistan at a relatively shallow depth of 20 kilometers. The earthquake occurred as the result of oblique strike-slip motion, consistent with rupture within the Eurasian tectonic plate. Tremors were felt as far away as New Delhi as well as Karachi in Pakistan. Even though the immediate area to the epicenter is sparsely populated, the majority of houses are of mud brick construction and damage is expected to be extensive. The perspective view, looking to the east, shows the location of the epicenter in Pakistan's Makran fold belt. The image is centered near 27 degrees north latitude, 65.5 degrees east longitude, and was acquired December 13, 2012. With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of 15 to 90 meters (about 50 to 300 feet), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet. ISS018-E-028898 (7 Feb. 2009) --- The summit of Popocatepetl Volcano in Mexico is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 18 crewmember on the International Space Station. Volcano Popocatepetl, a large stratovolcano located approximately 70 kilometers to the southeast of Mexico City, is considered by many volcanologists to be the planets riskiest volcano. The volcano warrants this distinction because of its proximity to one of the most densely populated megacities on Earth (population near 23 million in 2009). The variety of potential volcanic hazards at Popocatepetl is also considerable, including explosive eruptions of ash, pyroclastic flows (hot, fluidized masses of rock and gas that flow rapidly downhill), and debris avalanches. The Whitewater Fire in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness in Oregon was started by a lightning strike. As of Aug. 18, 2017, more than 117,000 acres and 30 miles (48 kilometers) of the Pacific Crest Trail are closed to the public in an area that had been expected to be popular with people there to view the August 21 solar eclipse. The smoke clouds sit over the burned area, just west-northwest of Mount Jefferson. The image was acquired Aug. 18, 2017, covers an area of 16 by 17 miles (26.1 by 27.2 kilometers), and is located at 44.7 degrees north, 121.8 degrees west.

SL2-04-018 (June 1973) --- A vertical view of the Arizona-Utah border area showing the Colorado River and Grand Canyon photographed from the Skylab 1/2 space station in Earth orbit. This picture was taken by one of the six lenses of the Itek-furnished S190-A Multispectral Photographic Facility Experiment in the Multiple Docking Adapter of the space station. Type S0-356 film was used. The row of white clouds extend north-south over the dark colored Kaibab Plateau. The junction of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers is in the southwest corner of the picture. The body of water is Lake Powell on the Colorado River upstream from the Grand Canyon. The lone peak at the eastern edge of the photograph south of Colorado River is the 10,416-foot Navajo Mountain. The S190-A experiment is part of the Skylab Earth Resources Experiments Package(EREP).

ISS011-E--8489 (10 June 2005) --- This digital still photograph, taken on June 10 from the Earth-orbiting International Space Station, shows an active Colima, the most prominent volcanic center of the western Mexican Belt. Around 11 p.m. local time, June 6, an explosion from this volcano, for which the summit elevation is approximately 3,850 meters, produced an ash plume to a height of approximately 8.5 kilometers (27,900 feet). The ash plume traveled southwest at a speed of approximately 79 kilometers per hour, and ash fell in and around the cities of Colima, about 30 kilometers away, and Villa de Alvarez. Brief evacuation of some 50 residents in the area was considered a minor undertaking and it was reported some three days after this picture was taken that all were able to return to their homes.

ISS024-E-012425 (22 Aug. 2010) --- This photograph, featuring a landscape in the central Andes mountains near the Chile/Argentina border dominated by numerous volcanoes and associated landforms, was photographed by an Expedition 24 crew member on the International Space Station. Layers of older sedimentary rocks are visible to the southeast (upper right). Many of the volcanic cones show grooves eroded by water to form gullies. Such erosion has occurred since the host volcano was built up, indicating that most volcanoes in this view have been inactive for centuries or millennia. A few volcanoes exhibit much less erosion, and even show tongues of recent, dark lava flows (top left). According to scientists, two of these volcanoes, Cerro el Condor and Peinado have likely erupted within approximately the last 12,000 years (the Holocene Epoch). ISS013-E-79496 (9 Sept. 2006) --- This picture, photographed from the International Space Station by an Expedition 13 crewmember, includes the Baikonur launch complex and thus has special significance for the Expedition 13 crew and all crews who have launched aboard Soyuz craft to join the orbital outpost. Baikonur, formerly known as Leninsk, is a city within Kazakhstan, but it is rented and administered by Russia. It was constructed to service the Baikonur Cosmodrome and was officially renamed Baikonur by Boris Yeltsin on December 20, 1995. The name Baikonur is Kazakh for "wealthy brown," i.e. "fertile land with many herbs."

STS087-717-075 (19 November  5 December 1997) --- Featured in this view is the Tibesti Massif in northern Chad in central Saharan Africa is a very large mountain range of old, dark, hard rocks, which is surrounded by sand seas. The mountains are capped with recent volcanoes and volcanic flows. The volcanoes of Tibesti are similar to those of Hawaii -- they are thought to be the result of a large hot spot deep in the Earth underneath northern Africa. The most striking volcano is the Pic Tousside (3,265 meters). The lava flows down the flanks of Pic Tousside make a characteristic and recognizable shape something like a giant squid -- thus providing astronauts a key visual marker as they fly across northern Africa. Because northern Africa receives very little rainfall, the volcano and crater shapes look very young. The occasional rainfall has created small gullies down the sides of the mountains, which can be seen when the sunlight is relatively low. Small amou

ISS010-E-13393 (15 January 2005) --- Mt. Damavand, Iran is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 10 crewmember on the International Space Station (ISS). Located approximately 50 kilometers to the northeast of Tehran, Mt. Damavand is an impressive stratovolcano that reaches 5,670 meters (18,598 feet) in elevation. Damavand, which is part of the Alborz mountain range that borders the Caspian Sea to the north, is believed by scientists to be a young volcano that has mostly formed during the Holocene Epoch (over approximately the last 10,000 years). The western flank of the volcano includes solidified lava flows with flow levees  walls formed as the side edges of flowing lava cooled rapidly, forming a chute that channeled the hotter interior lava. Two such flows with well-defined levees are highlighted by snow on the mountainside (center). Damavand is the highest peak in Iran and the highest volcano in the Middle East.
