ISS010-E-24596 (14 April 2005) --- Dallas, Texas is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 10 crew member on the International Space Station. The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is the largest in Texas with an approximate population of 6 million people in 2005. Founded by John Neely Bryan in 1841, the city became the center for the United States oil economy with the discovery of oilfields to the east of the city in 1930. The Dallas-Forth Worth region today is a major corporate, banking, and technological center. This image captures the northwestern portion of the metropolitan area. Standing water bodies such as Lake Lewisville and Grapevine Lake are highlighted by sunglint, where the surface of the water acts as a mirror reflecting sunlight back towards the astronauts on the Station. Using the sunglint to define edges of water helps when mapping water bodies and stream courses on a landscape note the region of small ponds to the north of Grapevine Lake highlighted b

On May 18, 1980, a major volcanic eruption occurred at Mount St. Helens, a volcano located in the state of Washington, United States. Frisco, Texas is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, located about 40 km (24.9 mi) northeast of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Founded in 1860 along the Shawnee Trail, the town has become a bedroom community for workers in Dallas-Fort Worth. The city saw explosive growth between April 9, 1984 when the Landsat TM image was acquired, and April 15, 2018 when the ASTER image was acquired. Population grew from 4,500 to 174,000. The images cover an area of 27 by 34.5 km (16.7 by 21.4 mi), and are located at 33.1 degrees north, 96.8 degrees west.

STS062-84-028 (4-18 March 1994) --- According to NASA scientists this image is the clearest photo of Mexico City taken from United States manned spacecraft. North is to the upper right. Mexico City sits in a basin surrounded by large volcanoes. The restricted atmospheric circulation in the basin, coupled with the inevitable air emissions produced by a city of 20 million people has created a critical air pollution problem for the city. In most photographs of the region, Mexico City is obscured by haze. Scientists feel the clear atmosphere in this photograph may be due, in part, to the stringent air emission restrictions now in place. The clarity of the photograph allows many key cultural features to be identified, including all of the major boulevards, the horse track (western part of the city), the university (south of the city), and the museum areas. Large, man-made ponds east of the city also stand out.

iss061e004461 (Oct. 8, 2019) --- The Rhône river, Réservoir du Grande-Large and the Groupama Stadium are pictured just east of the French city of Lyon as the International Space Station orbited 253 miles above the European nation.

This is a spaceborne radar image of the city of Sacramento, the capital of California. Urban areas appear pink and the surrounding agricultural areas are green and blue.

NASA's ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer)captured these images of Guatemala's Fuego volcano on Nov. 24, following a recent eruption. The main image shows the lava flows on the flanks of Fuego (upper left corner) in light gray. Vegetation is shown in red, clouds in white, and city and fields in dark gray. A thick ash plume rising from the peak of the volcano and more diffuse ash clouds over the southern part of the scene are also visible. The thermal infrared composite highlights the ash clouds in orange, with a dark orange cloud over the summit where the ash is thickest. White areas are relatively warmer; Fuego's summit is bright white at the active crater.

Najaf, Iraq. The world's largest cemetery is located in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq, west of the Euphrates River, and along the Najaf Sea. The Wadi-al-Salam cemetery, Arabic for Peace Valley , covers an area of about 10 square kilometers, and has over 6 million graves. Daily burials have been going on for over 1400 years. ISS040-E-033077 (4 July 2014) --- Because the Expedition 40 crew member on the International Space Station, flying at an altitude of 221 nautical miles, was using an 800mm focal length on his camera, great detail can be seen in this picture featuring a large portion of London, England. The Thames River is easily spotted snaking through the large city.

This radar image covers a portion of the Richtersveld National Park and Orange River (top of image) in the Northern Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa.

ISS007-E-06305 (6 June 2003) --- This image featuring two capital cities on opposite banks of the Congo River was taken by an Expedition 7 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The smaller city is Brazzaville on the north side of the river, and Kinshasa on the south side. The cities lie at the downstream end of an almost circular widening in the river known as Stanley Pool. The international boundary follows the south shore of the pool (~30 kilometers in diameter). The Congo River exits the pool through a markedly narrowed channel at a series of whitewater rapids that can be seen in this view from space.

S73-34295A (June 1973) --- A vertical view of a portion of northern California reproduced from data taken from the Skylab Multispectral Scanner, experiment S192, in the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. This view is the most westerly one-third of Frame No. 001, Roll No. 518, S192, Skylab 2. Frame No. 001 extends from the Pacific coast at the Eureka area southeasterly 175 nautical miles to the Feather River drainage basin. Included in this view are Sacramento River Valley, Oroville Reservoir, Oroville and Chico. This non-photographic image is a color composite of channels 2 (visible), 7 and 12 (infrared) from the Earth Resources Experiments Package (EREP) S192 scanner. The scanner techniques assist with spectral signature identification and mapping of ground truth targets in agriculture, forestry, geology, hydrology and oceanography.

SL3-87-299 (July-September 1973) --- A vertical view of southeastern New York State is seen in this Skylab 3 Earth Resources Experiments Package S190-B (five-inch Earth terrain camera) infrared photograph taken from the Skylab space station in Earth orbit. An 18-inch, 450mm lens and type 2443 infrared Ektachrome film was used. This picture covers the northern part of New Jersey, a part of northwestern Pennsylvania, and the western tip of Connecticut. The body of water is Long Island Sound. The wide Hudson River flows southward across a corner of the photograph. The New York City metropolitan area occupies part of the picture. Federal agencies participating with NASA on the EREP project are the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Interior, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Corps of Engineers. Polly Ranch, near Friendswood, is visible west of Interstate Highway 45 (right side). FM528 goes horizontally through the middle, and FM518 runs vertically through frame center, with the two roads intersecting near Friendswood.

STS039-85-029 (28 April-6 May 1991) --- This 70mm frame is one of the best pictures of the Oklahoma City area from the manned space program, according to NASA photo experts studying STS-39 onboard photography. The central business district is near the center. Several municipalities are visible, along with thousands of acres of farmland. The towns of Norman and Moore and the South Canadian River are in the bottom (south). El Reno and Wiley Post Field off I-40W are just below center in lower left quadrant. Edmond is seen at the top (north). Tinker Field can be seen north of I-40E at right center. Lake Overholser shows recent spring rainfall northwest of the central business district.

Folds in the lower reaches of valley glaciers can be caused by powerful surges of tributary ice streams. This phenomenon is spectacularly displayed by the Sustina Glacier in the Alaska Range as seen by NASA's Terra spacecraft.

S114-E-5455 (27 July 2005) --- This digital still camera frame, showing the Great Salt Lake and Salt Lake City, is one of a series of photos of both domestic and world-wide targets of opportunity captured by the STS-114 astronauts. Salt Lake City is in the upper half of the photo between the Great Salt Lake and the smaller Lake Utah. A 28 mm lens was used to record the image.

AS09-26A-3748A (9 March 1969) --- A color infrared photograph of the Salton Sea and Imperial Valley area of Southern California and the Mexicali, Mexico area, taken on March 9, 1969, by one of the four synchronized cameras of the Apollo 9 Earth Resources Survey S065 Experiment. At 2:36 p.m. (EST) when this picture was made the Apollo 9 spacecraft was at an altitude of 103 nautical miles, and the sun elevation was 45 degrees above at which the four-camera combination was aimed was 33 degrees 3 minutes north latitude, and 115 degrees 45 minutes west longitude. The other three cameras used: (B) black and white film with a red filter; (C) black and white infrared film; and (D) black and white film with a green filter.

This spaceborne radar image shows the city of Honolulu, Hawaii and adjacent areas on the island of Oahu. Honolulu lies on the south shore of the island, along the bottom of this image.

Lake Amadeus, Australia, True Colour Satellite Image. Like frantic brushstrokes, fire scars cover the arid landscape near Lake Amadeus in Australia's Northern Territory. Lake Amadeus is rich in salts that have been leached out of underlying sediments. When dry, its lake bed is transformed into a glistening sheet of white salt crystals. Istanbul has been a bustling trade city for thousands of years. In this 1975 image, taken by Landsat, the city centers on the Golden Horn the estuary that flows into the Bosporus Straight at the center of the scene. Shown in false color, vegetation is red, urban areas are gray, and water appears black. A bridge built in 1973 to connect the Asian and European sides of Istanbul is barely visible. By 2011, Istanbul's population had exploded from 2 to 13 million people, and the city has gone through a dramatic expansion.
