"Villain, thou diest": plate 10 from Othello (Act 5, Scene 1) etched 1844, reprinted 1900 Théodore Chassériau French In 1844 Eugène Piot commissioned the young Chassériau to prepare fifteen illustrations to Shakespeare's Othello. Inspired by a series of ground-breaking Hamlet lithographs that Delacroix had created one year earlier, the younger artist opted for the more linear technique of etching. His expressive conception of form had been learned in Ingres's studio then developed under Delacroix. In the series, key exchanges offer a compressed summary of much of the play, with a final cluster devoted to the tragic conclusion. Here we witness the violent climax of a key subplot that underscores Iago's villainy. After callously priming Roderigo to attack Cassio in the street for imagined wrongs, Iago now darts in to stab his friend in the thigh.. "Villain, thou diest": plate 10 from Othello (Act 5, Scene 1). See, Mr. Réac, it is quite enought!, from 'News of the day,' published in Le Charivari, March 30, 1871 March 30, 1871 Honoré Daumier Following Frances defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the fall of Napoleon III, thousands of working-class Parisians revolted against the new royalist-leaning, Versailles-based government and declared Paris an independent commune on March 28, 1871. Published just two days after the proclamation, this print shows Daumiers concern for the lives already lost in recent conflict and the bloodshed to come. An allegory of Paris points to a hillside filled with graves to tell the cowering reactionary that there are more than enough dead. This work proved to be prophetic as the Commune ended two months later with violent suppression by the French Army, known as "Bloody Week.".
