Fantastic Landscape. Artist: Francesco Guardi (Italian, Venice 1712-1793 Venice). Dimensions: Irregular, 61 1/4 x 74 1/2 in. (155.6 x 189.2 cm). Date: ca. 1765.These three large fantastic landscapes (capricci) were in the late nineteenth century in the castle of Colloredo di Monte Albano, in North-Eastern Italy, near Udine. It is unclear if the canvases were originally painted for the castle, which belonged to the Colloredo Mels family. The sizes and shapes of the paintings seem to have been adjusted by Guardi in the course of painting or immediately thereafter. The three compositions center around rocky outcroppings, slanting tree trunks and classical ruins. Small figures toiling and fishing are set against the vast expanse of delicately tinted sky and water. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Virgil's Tomb by Moonlight, with Silius Italicus Declaiming 1779 Joseph Wright (Wright of Derby) British Wright depicts a site that had long been a popular destination for visitors to Naples. Indeed he could reasonably expect that Londoners who viewed this painting at the Royal Academy in 1779 would recognize the tomb of Virgil (70-19 B.C.), author of the Aeneid. Perhaps more obscure is the figure, Silius Italicus, the Roman orator who commemorated the anniversary of the great poets death each year by reading his verses aloud within the tomb. As a meditation on mortality, Wright fittingly contrasts the flickering glow of the lantern and the silvery moonlight spreading over the landscape.. He composed this idyllic and romantic setting around the Temple of Vespasian in Rome. The building once stood at the foot of the Tabularium, the record office of ancient Rome, and only its very top is visible in Rooss painting, the way it appeared before the ruins were excavated in 1811. An Italian peasant woman plays a bagpipe, a child dances with a frolicking dog, livestock lay about contentedly on the rich land—motifs comprising an Arcadian atmosphere, an idealized rural life where the simple is good and the poor are happy.

Landscape at Saint-Ouen 1878 or 1879 Georges Seurat French Dated to 1878 or 1879, this is the earliest known of Seurats landscape oil sketches. His good friend, the artist Aman-Jean, remembered him painting it on site at Saint-Ouen, a northern suburb of Paris. Seurat introduced warm, orangey-brown hues into the composition by allowing the wood panel support to show through between his brushstrokes. This work was originally part of a double-sided panel that was divided after 1950 into two separate pictures. Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor 1862 Fitz Henry Lane (formerly Fitz Hugh Lane) American Lane returned to his native Gloucester from Boston in 1848. His works of the 1850s and 1860s are successively purged of genre and topographical elements, becoming increasingly spare and essential. By 1862, Lane had engineered a seamless, self-effacing style, possibly influenced by the works of Martin Johnson Heade. Stage Fort, once the site of military fortifications, sits on an arching land form used to lead the viewer's eye into the glowing, lucid, and almost eerily still distance. Despite the disjuncture between the virtually surreal, meticulously painted foreground and the sheer plane of water near the horizon, this work marks the transition to Lane's final, taut, elemental style. The painting's disquieting stasis, even with its hopeful pink and golden glow, creates a hermetic, elegiac mood found in many of Lane's late works.. Stage Fort across Gloucester Harbor 11396
