Europe from a set of The Four Continents designed ca. 1786, woven 1790-91 Jean Jacques François Le Barbier French This suite of four tapestries and its coordinating upholstery (MMA 1978.404.4a-c-.18a-c were commissioned from the Beauvais manufactory in 1786 and woven between 1790 and 1791. ¹ As has been noted, "The attractive and not impossible suggestion that the set was intended to be a gift from King Louis XVI to George Washington was made by the first scholar to publish the work.. but it is not supported by any contemporary evidence."² Regardless of whether the suite was intended as a gift to President Washington, the French Revolution intervened, and it is perhaps miraculous that the tapestries were woven at all. By the time they were complete, the French king was in no position to bestow diplomatic gifts on anyone. It is the representation of America as a rather demure-looking young woman that sets this iconographic scheme apart from other groupings of the Four Continents. In th

Chen Juzhong (1195-1224) Lady Wenji's Return to China. Cai Wenji (162-229), daughter of Cai Yong from the Eastern Han period, was abducted by northern tribesmen on horseback during the chaos of the Xingping era, married to King Zuoxian of the Southern Xiongnu, and later rescued by Cao Cao after payment of a large ransom. This painting had been attributed to Chen Juzhong during the Jiatai reign (1201-1204) of Emperor Ningzong of the Song dynasty.

Henry Byam Martin (British, 1803 - 1865) 1835 This large and beautifully preserved sheet bears testament to the deep interest in Greek culture among nineteenth-century British aristocrats. While the vogue for travel was for many a leisure activity, for Henry Byam Martin it was part of his career as a member of the British Royal Navy. While relatively little is known about Martin, by 1827 he had risen to the rank of Captain, and a year after he made this watercolor he was given command of HMS Carysfort. At the time much of the role of naval officers was the gathering of intelligence to further the causes of the British Empire, and skill in draftsmanship was a useful additional skill. In this view taken from the Hill of the Muses, Holland silhouettes the monument against the sky while rendering the dramatic surrounding topography.
