The Door of a Grotto. Artist: William Marlow (British, Southwark, London 1740/41-1813 Twickenham, London). Dimensions: Sheet: 11 in. × 13 1/2 in. (27.9 × 34.3 cm). Date: ca. 1765-66.Marlow made this free watercolor sketch during a trip through France and Italy. Spontaneous brushwork and bright washes evoke strong sunlight playing across stone, contrasted with a shadowed recess covered by a rough wooden door. The artist's travel likely was supported by the duchess of Northumberland, since Marlow later made many finished oils of Italian subjects for this English patroness. The freshness of the drawing is an early demonstration of watercolor's expressive potential and anticipates groundbreaking innovations that would be made twenty years later by the British artists Thomas Jones and John Robert Cozens in Rome and Naples. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Times of Day/ Vesper, Jan de Visscher, etcher, 1660, Netherlands, etching, Jan de Visscher/ Johannes Visscher (c. 1636-before 1712) was a Dutch Golden Age printmaker who became a painter in later life. According to Arnold Houbraken, the great early biographer of Dutch artists, he was an able etcher who made famous prints in his lifetime after the works of Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem (as here), Jan van Goyen, Adriaen van Ostade and Philips Wouwerman. He became an able pupil of the landscape painter Michiel Carree at the advanced age of 56. Houbraken spoke to Carree personally about his art, who claimed that Visscher became as good as he was at Italianate landscapes although no paintings by Visscher's hand are known today. Jan de Visscher had two brothers, Cornelis Visscher and Lambert de Visscher. Although he spent his earlier life in Haarlem, he had moved to Amsterdam in 1658. His death was not recorded, and since he is referred to in the past tense when Houbraken was writing, he is assu

Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island, Northumberland 1796-97 Thomas Girtin British Holy Island is dramatically situated on the coast of Northumbria and is reached at low tide by a track over the sand. This watercolor was likely based on sketches Girtin made during his tour to Scotland and northern England in the summer and early fall of 1796, and probably dates from 1797, when he exhibited ten subjects from the tour at the Royal Academy. Much influenced by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) and by John Robert Cozens (1752-1797), Girtin imparted a visionary grandeur to the scene. The massive basalt rock, rising above the shore and topped by a sixteenth-century castle, becomes the focus of the composition, overshadowing tiny human figures in the foreground. Relegated to the distant left background are the harbor, fishing village, and church of Saint Mary, with its extensive ruins of a priory and monastery.. Lindisfarne Castle, Holy Island, Northumberland. Thomas Girtin (British, London 1775-1802 Lon

Ruined Castle. Artist: Copy after John Sell Cotman (British, Norwich 1782-1842 London). Dimensions: Sheet: 8 1/16 × 10 11/16 in. (20.5 × 27.1 cm). Date: 1802-42.Areas of crude handling, and lack of finesse in the treatment of form and shadow, suggest that this drawing was made by a student copying a Cotman original. The latter returned to his home town of Norwich to run a school between 1823 and 1833, then moved back to London in 1834 to become drawing master at King's College School, retaining that position for the rest of his life.
