The Orion aerosciences team has performed more than 30 tests across the United States in support of the program, investigating the heating of the spacecraft during re-entry into Earths atmosphere. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- In the Thermal Protection System Facility NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, agency astronaut candidates are briefed on tiles being manufactured for the agency's Orion spacecraft. TPSF manager, Martin Wilson of Jacobs Technology, holds a heated tile sample demonstrating its ability to protect a spacecraft during the heat of reentry. Looking on, from the left, are Christina Hammock, Victor Glover and Nicole Mann. Plans call for the Lockheed Martin-built Orion to launch atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Exploration Flight Test EFT-1 later this year. The astronaut class of 2013 was selected by NASA after an extensive year-and-a-half search. The new group will help the agency push the boundaries of exploration and travel to new destinations in the solar system.

This type of computer interface paired with virtual reality training hardware and software helps the entire team for dealing with ISS elements.

S88-E-5010 (12-05-98) --- Operating at a control panel on Endeavour's aft flight deck, astronaut Nancy J. Currie works with the robot arm prior to mating the 12.8-ton Unity connecting module to Endeavour's docking system. The mating took place on late afternoon of Dec. 5. A nearby monitor provides a view of the remote manipulator system's (RMS) movements in the cargo bay. The feat marked an important step in assembling the new International Space Station. Manipulating the shuttle's 50-foot-long robot arm, Currie placed Unity just inches above the extended outer ring on Endeavour's docking mechanism, enabling Robert D. Cabana, mission commander to fire downward maneuvering jets, locking the shuttle'sdocking system to one of two Pressurized Mating Adapters (PMA) attached to Unity.The mating occurred at 5:45 p.m. Central time, as Endeavour sailed over eastern China.

Memorial Ceremony for Walter Cunningham. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Mercury astronauts, from left, Wally Schirra, Deke Slayton and Alan Shepard work inside the Mercury Control Center where they were stationed during the Faith 7 mission of astronaut Gordon Cooper, launched on May 15, 1963. This was the final mission of the Mercury Program. The Mercury Mission Control Center in Florida played a key role in the United States' early spaceflight program. Located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the original part of the building was constructed between 1956 and 1958, with additions in 1959 and 1963. The facility officially was transferred to NASA on Dec. 26, 1963, and served as mission control during all the Project Mercury missions, as well as the first three flights of the Gemini Program, when it was renamed Mission Control Center.
