. The front and rear elevation of the Town Hall are each dominated by a sculpted marble tympanum approximately twenty metres wide and surmounted by bronze statues. The side facing the Dam, where ships could moor, depicts the seas paying homage to Amsterdam. Parts of the tympanum design have been preserved, including this Maid of Amsterdam and all kinds of mythological sea creatures, such as nereids and tritons on dolphins and seahorses.

Ancestor figure, early 20th century, 7 5/8 x 2 7/8 x 2 1/8 in. (19.37 x 7.3 x 5.4 cm), Wood, porcelain, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20th century, The knife and bottle (imported from Europe) are indications of authority, suggesting that this ancestor figure represents a high-ranking man, most likely a chief. The large feetnote the detailed toessymbolize stability, while the small shards of white porcelain used for the eyes enhance the figure’s visionary power. Its true power, however, was hidden: the life force of the ancestor, imbued into the figure by inserting tiny remains of his corpse into a cavity near the rectum.

America, c. 1745, Johann Joachim Kändler; Manufacturer: Meissen Porcelain Factory, German, 1706-1775, 10 3/4 x 12 1/2 x 7 3/8 in. (27.31 x 31.75 x 18.73 cm), Hard-paste porcelain, Germany, 18th century, This allegorical figure of America from a set of continents is attributed to one of Meissen's most important sculptors, Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775), whose principal contribution lay in the area of porcelain figurines. Here, 'America' is portrayed as a idealized semi-nude Native American woman, who is depicted in regal garb among some of her attributes, animals and plants native to the American continent. Europeans of the period perceived America as an exotic and fertile land, populated by unusual peoples and animals such as the alligator and the parrot. Indeed, animals were a common motif for Kaendler, who even produced some life-size porcelain specimens. His works are prized for their lively, Baroque expressivity and are based on careful study of nature. They stand at the high

Console (console d'applique) ca. 1720-30 French Small wall-mounted brackets (consoles dapplique) which held porcelain vases, clocks, or candelabra, usually harmonized with the interior decoration of a room. Featuring a winged and gilded dragon among green painted palm leaves, it is difficult to attribute the design of this bracket to a particular artist. Eighteenth-century designers who favored dragon motifs include Jean-Bernard-Honoré Turreau, known as Toro, Alexis Peyrotte, and Nicolas Pineau. This bracket was part of the model collection of woodwork, paneling and seat furniture of Maison Leys, a successful decorating business, located at the Place de la Madeleine in Paris. Since 1885 the business was directed by Georges Hoentschel who installed the collection in 1903 in a museum-like display at Boulevard Flandrin, Paris. Three years later, Hoentschel sold the collection to J. Pierpont Morgan who gave the panels with the rest of the decorators seventeenth and eighteenth century obje

Boulder with Daoist paradise 18th century China This impressive jade sculpture represents a Daoist paradise where immortals, cranes, and deer move through a mountainous landscape punctuated by pines, a waterfall, and a pavilion that stands beside a peach tree laden with fruit. Lower down the slope, a servant offers a platter of these "peaches of immortality" to two bearded figures. The otherworldly atmosphere is further enhanced by the meandering clouds that encircle the crest of the mountain. Jade, which is sonorous when struck but is harder than steel, has long been associated with moral virtue and immortality. The theme of reclusion within misty, fantastic realms appears in youxian (Wandering in Transcendence) poetry of the Six Dynasties period (220-589), and was a very popular painting subject beginning in the Tang dynasty (618-906).. Buddhist Lion-Dog, c. 1800, 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 x 1-7/8 in. (6.4 x 8.9 x 4.8 cm), Bamboo root, China, 18th-19th century, Exquisitely carved from bamboo root, this small scholar's object represents a bushy-maned Buddhist lion-dog (shi zi) with two cubs and a pierced ball. The ball symbolizes the Buddhist jewel of truth that the lion dog protects. The theme is likely taken from fine-line paintings of Buddhist divinities, which often included fantastic beasts such as these. In style and technique, this sculpture is closest to the work of Shi Qiji also called da sheng. He was a second generation member of a well-known family of bamboo carvers in Jiading, Jiangsu province, the great bamboo carving center that produced a majority of the finest carvers.

Lohan Holding a Fu Dog, 1662-1722. China, Jiangxi province, Jingdezhen kilns, Qing dynasty (1644-1911), Kangxi reign (1662-1722). Porcelain with famille verte overglaze enamel decoration; overall: 24.3 x 12.6 cm (9 9/16 x 4 15/16 in.). This lohan, a disciple of Buddha with supernatural powers, was perhaps part of a house altar set or a decorative item in a household. Lohans, also known as arhats, are said to be able to tame tigers and tread on water. Here the lohan is shown as a monklike figure, holding a fu-dog.This lohan and its pair holding the peach of immortality (1964.191.1) embody a humorous attitude and playful behavior, indifference to danger and miracles, and hence a detachment from worldly affairs.During the 1600s, porcelain sculptures decorated in famille verte overglaze enamel colors were produced for the domestic as well as export market to Europe.

Angel second half 18th century Italian, Naples In 1964, Loretta Hines Howard generously presented to the Museum over 140 Neapolitan crèche figures, dating from the second half of the eighteenth century. The varied assortment includes figures from the three traditional scenes of a complete Neapolitan presepio: the Nativity, with angels, shepherds, and sheep; the procession of the three Magi, with their colorful retinue of attendants; and the varied and gay crowd of country and town people thronging the tavern, or inn, of Bethlehem the diversorium mentioned by St. Luke, where on the Holy Night there was no place for Mary and Joseph. Averaging between twelve and fifteen inches in height, according to the position they were to take in perspective in the stage set, the figures are pliable and can be given poses at will, according to their facial expressions. Their bodies are made of tow and wire, their arms and legs are finely carved of wood, and their heads and shoulders are modeled of t

Pair of firedogs (chenets) ca. 1772 Quentin-Claude Pitoin French Attributes of hunting embellish these highly accomplished models, which are known to have been repeated in different sizes. The small sculpture of a wild boar on the left andiron and of a reclining stag on the other surmount a rectangular base, which is further enriched with a relief panel in front showing, below the boar, dead game and, below the stag, a sleeping hound amid game. Dogs pelts, oak and ivy branches, and a pile of additional game, all beautifully chased and finished, are also incorporated in the elaborate designs. The figure of the boar at bay is derived from a lifesize Roman marble in the Galleria degli Uffizi, in Florence. That antique sculpture was reproduced in bronze, much reduced in size, by the Florentine sculptor and bronze caster Giovanni Francesco Susini (1585-ca. 1653). One of his early seventeenth-century replicas was probably the source for the sculptural boar on the Museums andiron. Madame du

Sagittarius (section of a zodiac frieze). Culture: Italian, Venice. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 7 × 8 3/4 × 2 1/4 in. (17.8 × 22.2 × 5.7 cm). Date: ca. 1530-40.Typically Venetian are the punched grounds against which the forms dance on these frieze sections. More sinuously elegant than reliefs by leading Venetian bronze sculptors of the generation active about 1500-1520--Alessandro Leopardi, Vittore Gambello (known as Camelio), and the Master of the Barbarigo Reliefs--the present two (see also Capricorn, 2004.440.1) may date slightly later but are still informed by High Renaissance standards of expression and orga nization. The band to which they belonged was exceptionally large--on the basis of these two of the zodiac's twelve signs, the original ring has been projected at thirty-two to thirty-eight inches in diameter. Its function can only be surmised. At Sagittarius's top left are faint remains of an inscription, which is mostly filed away. One can discern F. CITA0 (abbreviati
