John the Baptist and Two Men, with Christ 1770-80 William Hamilton British Hamilton belonged to a generation determined to expand the scope of the arts in Britain. He traveled to Rome as a teenager to study with Antonio Zucchi, returned to England to make decorative paintings for Robert Adam, then entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1769. From that point forward he focused on historical and literary subjects, together with portaits. This early drawing may relate to lines in chapter 3 of Matthew's Gospel where Jesus approaches John the Baptist by the River Jordan as the latter baptises repentant Israelites.. Studies for "The Bride at Her Toilet on the Day of Her Wedding" ca. 1838 Sir David Wilkie British, Scottish This is one of a group of sketches where Wilkie developed compositional ideas for a painting he would show at the Royal Academy, London in 1838 (now National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh). Pen lines suggest movement, and wash is used to indicate shadow as the artist conveys the movements of a young woman dressing for her wedding assisted by a companion. The figure's nudity and elevated placement echo classical models, even though the subject was one of Scottish genre, and Wilkie's technique indebted to Dutch seventeenth-century masters such as Rembrandt..
