Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. Date: 19th century.Among the most splendid sights and sounds of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters was that of an elaborately dressed courtesan in procession with her entourage and the clattering cadence of their footsteps in high, lacquered clogs. This beauty's sumptuous, lavender-colored outer garment featuring three-dimensional wisteria blossoms is worn over layered robes, all rendered in extraordinary detail, including an elaborate obi decorated with a lion and peonies in gold. Her coiffeur boasts an assortment of tortoiseshell combs and long hair ornaments. Only the full moon, a pale orb rendered against faint washes of ink, and two geese in flight in the upper section of the scroll suggest an outdoor evening setting. Lazio Roma Anzio Villa Sarsina. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Post-medieval: Architecture, architectural sculpture, painting. Curently in disrepair, this villa was constructed by the Corsini family and later completely remodeled by the Aldobrandinis in 1715. The interior of the structure was extensively restored in 1875 by the architect Francesco Vespignani. Object Notes: Undocumented Hutzel name. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

We find the huts tenant in a covered boat on the river, being poled by a servant, offering us a viewpoint of and a pathway toward a dramatic landscape of precipitous cliffs, misty valleys, waterfalls, and distant layered peaks.

Boats upon Waves mid- to late 17th century Studio of Tawaraya Sōtatsu Japanese This work relates closely to a pair of screens by the celebrated early seventeenth-century Kyoto painter Sōtatsu depicting Matsushima, a scenic locale near Sendai in northern Japan named after its tiny islands dotted with pines. The present screen echoes Sōtatsus earlier composition with its gold-filled cloud formations and its rocks in vibrant shades of brown, blue, and green. However, growing from the rocks are maple trees with autumnal leaves, not pines, and newly introduced are two empty boats adrift on gently rolling waves. Tomb KV9 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings was originally constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses V. He was interred here, but his uncle, Ramesses VI, later reused the tomb as his own. The layout is typical of the 20th dynasty - the Ramesside period 1145 BC

Zhao Mengfu Writing the Heart (Hridaya) Sutra in Exchange for Tea, 1542-43. Qiu Ying (Chinese, 1494-1552). Handscroll, ink and light color on paper; image: 20.6 x 78.3 cm (8 1/8 x 30 13/16 in.); overall: 21.1 x 553.6 cm (8 5/16 x 217 15/16 in.). The Yuan dynasty calligrapher Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) is said to have transcribed the Heart Sutra for a certain priest named Li in exchange for tea. Later, during the Ming dynasty, the professional painter Qiu Ying from Suzhou painted this scene for his patron.Here, Zhao Mengfu holds a brush and has a piece of paper laid out before him. On the table is an ink stone, an ink stick, and a small water dropper. Drops of water would dissolve the ink stick into liquid ink when it was ground on the flat square stone.

Banner (Nobori) Japan 1827 Nobori are banners that were used at festivals and public entertainments or to celebrate the birth of a son. The energetically dancing figure pictured on this banner can be identified by his bearded black mask as Sanbaso, the comic old man in Okina, a play in the Noh repertoire. The technique used to render Sanbaso is called tsutsugaki (literally, "tube drawing"). Paste was applied to the cloth through a tube fitted with a small metal tip. Then, when dyes and pigments were brushed on, the areas covered with paste resisted the color. Here, all the white lines that delineate details of the figure's garments resulted from the freehand application of paste. Nobori generally come in two sizes. This example is of the larger size, consisting of two widths of cloth sewn together, and it has a total height of over twenty-five feet.
