Autumn Millet and Small Birds Attributed to Kano Sanraku Japanese These screens celebrate the rich harvest of autumn. The ripening millet attracts small birdssparrows, buntings, and titmiceclamoring to satisfy their appetites. In contrast to the natural motifs, objects such as the bamboo fences, the net to capture small birds, and the scarecrow rattles hanging from ropes may evoke in the viewer’s imagination a garden or farm in the autumn. Although the details are rendered realistically, the scene is composed of images that have a long history as traditional subject matter: grain and sparrows, millet and quail, and autumn grasses. These motifs appear repeatedly in pottery, lacquers, and metalwork, as well as in painting. To Japanese viewers of the past, these seemingly decorative motifs would have brought to mind a deeply ingrained set of associations with poetry, some of which went beyond the merely visual. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Exterior views of part of the former Villa Frigeri, which along with a neighboring palazzo, houses the Museo Nazionale di Antichita. Views also of the gardens, fountain (17th century) and the restored interior. The so-called "Capestrano Warrior" (5th century B.C.) is found in the Antiquities core collection under Men, Youths, Warriors--Stone--Etruscan, Italic. Hutzel views include statues, funerary monuments, portrait busts and mosaics, many of which were excavated from Alba Fucens. Hutzel paid particular attention to the colossal statue of Hercules (late Hellenistic); the funerary temple reliefs of Lucius Storax; various nudes, torsos and heads, including the portrait bust of Agrippina Minore and the sepulchral portrait relief of Lucius Poditius (1st century A.D.); gravestones with inscriptions and bas-reliefs; Roman coins; bronze figurines (mainly warriors); and bronze vessels, utensils, helmets and ornaments.

Taking this as a threat to his rule, Herod found out where the child was to be born and ordered the massacre—but Jesus was no longer there. The Holy Innocents, recognized as the first Christian martyrs, are commemorated in Christian worship. This painting is thought to be a study for a mural in a church in Naples, Italy .

Prayer for Death in the Desert Elihu Vedder (American, 1836-1923). , ca. 1867. Oil on canvas, 13 7/8 x 49 5/8 in. (35.2 x 126 cm). An American expatriate in Rome from the mid-1860s, Elihu Vedder often undertook mysterious or symbolic subject matter of a kind that was more prevalent in American literature than in painting of the period. Especially drawn to the theme of the isolated soul questing in a bleak landscape, Vedder here depicted a haggard man at the end of a search, yielding himself to an apparently tragic destiny. Although the artist later stated that these ideas emerged from that rich, romantic sadness of youth,” he based his compositions on extensive figure studies and on-site landscape sketches, in keeping with his academic training in Paris and Rome. The setting for this subject derives from drawings executed in the vicinity of the dramatically eroded white-limestone cliffs of Volterra, Italy. American Art ca. 1867
