Two Elephants Fighting in a Courtyard Before Muhammad Shah, c. 1730-40. Attributed to Nainsukh (Indian, 1710-1778). Ink and color on paper; overall: 62.5 x 42 cm (24 5/8 x 16 9/16 in.). The Mughal emperor responsible for a revival of courtly arts and pastimes was Muhammad Shah (reigned 1719-48). This painting was made by an artist from a small kingdom in the western Himalayas who stayed at the Mughal court in Delhi and painted scenes of his experiences. Like his predecessors, Muhammad Shah enjoyed watching elephant fights. He is shown in his window of public audience, marked by a golden carpet, smoking a hookah. Napkin with the history of Abraham, Quirijn Jansz. Damast (Possible), c. 1650 - c. 1674 Linnamast napkin with the history of Abraham. Midfield: The symmetrical pattern shows two scenes from bottom to top: 1. The sacrifice of Abraham. Abraham, with a bare head and in the wide mantle and short tunic, has laid one hand on the head of Isaac, which lies down on some firewood for an altar. Abraham keeps the crooked sword in the raised hand, which is stopped by a descending angel. In the middle a ramskop between thorn bushes with a tree above it. 2 Abraham drives Hagar and Ismaël. Abraham stands in front of his house, a hat on the head, reaches Hagar a field bottle and bread. Hagar is barrew, wears a veil to the Sévignékapsel and holds both hands for Ishmaël, who captivated and looked at his mother between them. Caption: Hysmael. Tigers Hunting Boars and Deer ca. 1830 Western India, Rajasthan, Kota The hunt was central to Kota court life. Since artists routinely accompanied these expeditions, depictions of animals in a landscape feature prominently in the works of the Kota school. In this unusual composition, the human predator has been eliminated; instead, the focus is on a pack of tigers stalking and attacking their prey. Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

Meeting between Yaoshan and Li Ao before 1256 Attributed to Zhiweng Chinese This painting was inscribed by the Chan (Zen) Buddhist priest Yanxi Guangwen between 1254 and 1256, while he was abbot of Lingyin temple in Hangzhou. The work is an important example of early Chan Buddhist "apparition" painting, so called for its pale, sensitive brushwork.Depicted here is a famous encounter between the Confucian scholar Li Ao (active ca. 840) and the Chan master Yaoshan. Having heard of the master's reputation, the scholar went to see him but was disappointed and remarked: "Seeing your face is not as good as hearing your name."
