July, from The Medallion Months Made 1500-1528 Brussels. This tapestry and its companion, February, belong to the earliest of the four Medallion Months suites known today. The 12 months of the year were an extremely popular subject for tapestry cycles. In this particular series, each hanging has a rectangular, vertical format; a central mythological figure; an oval band depicting the signs of the zodiac, personifications of the hours, and other symbols of the passage of time; as well as figural compositions outside the medallion, in the four corners of the tapestry. The zodiac sign Leo at the top of the medallion band, with the inscription JVLIVS (July) below, reveals this tapestryís subject. The inscription RVMANA CONCINE appears on either side of the central deity, identifying her as Runcina, goddess of mowing and harvesting. Mercury Changes Aglauros to Stone, from the Story of Mercury and Herse designed ca. 1540, woven ca. 1570 Design attributed to Giovanni Battista Lodi da Cremona Italian Picking up the narrative from the tapestry of Aglauross Vision of the Bridal Chamber of Herse displayed near-by, this is the final episode in the story of the god Mercurys love for the mortal princess of Athens, Herse. Emboldened by her jealous vision of Mercury and Herses union, Herses sister Aglauros barred his entry to her sisters apartments. In his anger and frustration, Mercury transformed Aglauros into stone; in the tapestry, we see her disappearing into the door-frame. Mercury can seen again at the right, flying away and leaving the longed-for union with Herse unfulfilled. The Falcon's Bath ca. 1400-1415 South Netherlandish This recently discovered tapestry depicting courtly figures training a falcon is in remarkably good condition. At the center of the tapestry, four luxuriously dressed figures are gathered in front of a rose trellis and flowering turf bench. The lady and the gentleman in the foreground, attended by courtiers behind them, are encouraging the falcon to bathe in the basin of water between them. Salem samplers are characterized by long filling stitches made from untwisted silk floss. This early sampler is one of a small group made in the school of an unknown teacher who may have introduced this technique, which remained popular in Salem into the nineteenth century.. Date: ca. 1760.Eighteenth-century embroideries wider than they are tall, like this one, were called "chimneypieces" because they were meant to be hung above a parlor mantel, a place of honor. The prominent display of this type of schoolgirl needlework signaled that the young lady of the home had been well educated and was ready to become an accomplished wife. The designs found on chimneypieces were usually derived from European print sources; in this case, scenes from the story of Adam and Eve were adapted from prints of paintings in the renowned collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria. Valance. Culture: probably British. Dimensions: H. 21 x W. 68 inches (53.3 x 172.7 cm). Date: 1580-1610.This valance, executed in wool tent stitch with silk highlights, follows a common compositional structure found in large-scale narrative embroideries and tapestries, that of combining multiple scenes in one continuous panel. The valance depicts scenes from courtly life, but the precise narrative has not been identified. Yvonne Hackenbroch titled this piece "The Education of Princess Elizabeth I" mainly because of the young child with the man in classical garb, said to be a depiction of Elizabeth I's tutor, Roger Ascham, but there is no other iconography to support this reading. The embroidery could simply illustrate the daily activities of ladies at court, although the interaction of the various figures implies the existence of a specific sequence of events.One possible iconographical reading lies in the identification of contemporary female personifications of the Five Senses.
