Border early 17th century Italian Punto in arialiterally, "stitches in the air"is one of the earliest styles of needle lace, which is itself developed from cutwork of primarily geometric design. When lacemakers transitioned to using a foundation of threads laid out according to a pattern drawn on parchment, they were able to incorporate more fluid lines and curves into their designs.. Kaftan second half 17th-early 18th century The back of this fragmentary silk robe, or kaftan, features a design of large gold palmettes and curving serrated saz leaves on a white ground. The design is dotted with carnations and small blossoms typical of the floral style popular in the seventeenth-century Ottoman court. The main panel is almost the full width of the loom on which the textile was made. Kaftans like this would likely have been given as gifts to courtiers and other dignitaries.. Kaftan 454043

Carpet with the weapons of Rogier de Beaufort, Turenne and the comminges (fragment), Anonymous, c. 1376 - c. 1378 Fragment of a wall carpet. On blue soil, a pattern of diamond-shaped figures has been applied by four storks, alternative to the beaks and the legs to each other in white, red, light and thunder brown and black. Within these windows there is a tilted castle with three towers, from the extremes of which winged angels rise together hold a crown over the head of a deer, elephant or unicorn. Above the crown, the coat of arms of Turenne (landed of gold and throat) and Van Rogier de Beaufort (field of silver with six in a wreath of lazuur and a sloping bar of lazuur) is applied above the crown. Textile Depicting a Scene from Nizama's Khamsa 16th-17th century The imagery seen on this exquisitely woven cloth suggests the theme of love. The romance of King Khusrau and Princess Shirin, immortalized by the poet Nizami, is illustrated here, with the princess shown on horseback and the sculptor Farhad, hopelessly in love with Shirin, hacking a cleft in the mountain with his axe to bring his beloved a refreshing drink. Silk Velvet Designed by 'Ghiyath' second half 16th century Ghiyath Iranian The beige satin background of this silk velvet panel was originally covered in shining metal threads, the remnants of which are still visible in some places. Luxurious textiles like this one were described by Europeans who traveled to the Safavid court. This piece bears the inscription "work of Ghiyath," referring to a designer who was attached to the Safavid court and served as a master weaver at the court of Shah 'Abbas I at Isfahan.. Textile fragment 1700-1899 Russian This object is from the collection of Natalia de Shabelsky (1841-1905), a Russian noblewoman compelled to preserve what she perceived as the vanishing folk art traditions of her native country. Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg.Naboyka are block-printed textiles used for clothing as well as household objects and book bindings.
