Panel Designed 1890 United States. Sir Hubert von Herkomer, a Victorian-era painter of portraits and bucolic scenes, designed this panel as one component of a cohesive interior scheme for his home Lululaund, in England. The artist named the ornate Gothic Revival mansion in honor of his late wife, Lulu. Her name appears in the velvet design, beneath the scrolling banderole, which contains the Herkomer family motto, Propriis alis (By my own wings), written in Gothic script. Fragment Made 200 CE-900 CE Peru. Geometric patterns are common in Andean textile art. Although it may appear simple at first look, this panel is far more elaborate than meets the eye the geometric designs presented here were formed using multiple techniques, with the weaving of the blue and red half-step frets, the outlining in white embroidery, and the edging in cross-knit loop stitches. This pattern creates an overall checkerboard of color, with the juxtaposed colored surfaces further combining to create full-step frets.. Textile Fragment 13th-14th century Dated to either the thirteenth or fourteenth century, this plain-woven, block-printed, cotton textile fragment was once part of a much larger piece. This fragment exhibits the unique characteristics of technique and decoration associated with textile production in Western India, in the province of Gujarat, during the Middle Ages. The fragments elegant designs are printed through the use a single block which form intricate intertwining tendrils and floral designs on a dark blue monochrome background. The decorative program and motifs are stylistically connected to those found in Jain architecture and painted manuscripts which were produced in Gujarat. The vibrancy of the blue dye points to Western India, which at the time was a popular production center for richly dyed and block-printed textiles. Blue-ground Carpet Fragment with Scrolling Floral Vines 17th century This fragment of a carpet bears a variety of flowers on winding stems over a blue ground. Its structure, which is composed of two planes of warp threads, indicates that it was probably produced in the city of Kirman in southeastern Iran. Carpets from this city display a wide range of patterns but are alike in construction. Exported to India during the reign of Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605), Kirman carpets were known to be among the finest produced in Iran during this period.. Textile with crowned double headed eagles second half 16th century Chinese, Macao, for Iberian market Crowned and splayed double-headed eagles, symbols of the Habsburg dynasty, are woven into this Chinese textile, one of a large group of related examples made for the Portuguese and Spanish market in the last part of the sixteenth century. The group represents an early production for export of complex woven silks that integrate both Iberian and Asian aesthetics and design. In this example, the eagle holds in its talons arrows that pierce a heart-shaped vase. The device of a heart pierced by arrows is associated with the Augustinian religious order, while representations of floral vases were popular motifs in China. The conflation of pious and secular imagery seen here may be the result of free rein being given to the master weaver commissioned to produce the cloth.
