Date: 1757.<i>Ancient Rome</i> is a pendant to <i>Modern Rome</i> and shows the most famous antique monuments in the city. It was commissioned by the Count de Stainville, later the Duke de Choiseul, who is at the center with a guidebook in hand. Panini shows himself behind the chair. The gentlemen are admiring a copy of an ancient fresco. The Pantheon, the Coliseum, Trajan's column, the Farnese Hercules, and the Laocoön may be identified. Visitors leaving a prison 1794-95 Hubert Robert French During the second half of the eighteenth century in France, Hubert Robert was a fashionable artist. Painter of ruins, professor of landscape drawing, curator for the future Louvre museum from 1777, and draftsman of the gardens of the king from 1778, he counted among his clientele the royal family, the most eminent members of the court in Versailles, voluntarily exiled aristocrats like the Noailles family, and powerful financiers like the marquis de Laborde. As a result, and like many of his colleagues, Robert endured the consequences of the French Revolution which began in 1789. He was suspected "for his recognized incivism and his links with the aristocrats" by the members of the Convention on October 3, 1793 and was imprisoned in the Sainte-Pélagie prison from October 29, 1793 to January 31, 1794, before being transferred to the Saint-Lazare prison, where he remained until his release on August 4, 1794. Created as a temple under the Roman emperor Hadrian around the year AD 125, the Pantheon became a Christian church in 609. Significant restoration took place in the early 1700s, a period of renewed attention to early Christian monuments. The site was a major monument of antiquity, an active church, and its portico, visible through the door, held the most important art fair in the city. Panini shows the complexity of this public space by representing foreign tourists, local churchgoers, Roman nobles, and artists mingling under the dome.

Panini made numerous versions of this view, updating them in accordance with additions and alterations to the basilica. The earliest version is a large canvas in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, painted in 1730 for the French ambassador, Cardinal Melchior de Polignac.
