Mantle late 19th century Hungarian The Hungarian szür is derived from mantles over 2500 years old, and continued to be worn into the early 20th century. The garment was worn by shepherds mostly, providing protection from the harsh elements. Their thick wool felt was protective against cold and wet, and the long collars were adorned with roundels at the lower corners that could be connected to form a hood. Generally knee to mid-calf length, they were heavily adorned with embroidery and appliqués specific to their locality. The szür was usually worn draped over the shoulders, with the sleeves hanging loose. It was a much-coveted object, and so costly that many men resorted to thievery to afford one. This example has magnificent embroidery and adornment, distinguishing it as a particularly expensive garment.Stewart Culin (1858-1929) was the Brooklyn Museum's first Curator of Ethnology from 1903 to 1929. Chasuble and maniple second quarter 18th century European This chasuble and maniple owe their magnificent appearance not only to the sumptuousness of the costly textile from which they are made, but also to the perfectly matched pattern that comprises the chasuble's construction. The complex weave and brilliant color palette of the floral surrounds and blue ombréd satin combine to create a multi-dimensional effect: the blossoms appear to part to reveal an atmospheric and ethereal realm. In contrast to the make-up of many chasubles, here the textile is perfectly matched. The careful arrangement of the orphrey bands and side pieces is a more expensive construction method as it requires more of this expensive fabric to create a symmetrical whole.. Tunic with Dionysian Ornament. Dimensions: Tunic: L. 72 1/16 in. (183 cm)W. 53 1/8 in. (135 cm). Date: probably 5th century.A longer, wider version of the tunic was the ubiquitous garment of the Late Antique period. This tunic is one of four in the Museum's collection said to be from Akhmim, an ancient weaving center and apparently a center of both pagan and Christian thought and religion. The burgeoning ornament of this tunic expresses Dionysian themes, culminating with an image of the god himself on the shoulder squares. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Childs Coat with Ducks in Pearl Medallions, 700s. Probably Sogdia (present-day Uzbekistan). Silk: weft-faced compound twill weave (samite); width across shoulders: 84.5 cm (33 1/4 in.); length back of neck to hem: 51.4 cm (20 1/4 in.). The coats outer fabric is woven in five brilliant colors featuring paired ducks in pearl roundels, hallmarks of the precious and highly desired silks from Sogdia. The coats inner lining is a twill damask with a floral pattern made in China. The combination of Sogdian and Chinese silks in one garment with Tibetan ownership history is evidence of the vital exchange and cultural interaction among the peoples living along the trade routes of the Silk Road.This precious coat, presumably made for a Tibetan prince, is the earliest dated textile here on display. Given the coats pristine condition, it is unclear whether the garment was ever worn, or was used as a diplomatic gift or perhaps as currency.

Surcoat (jinbaori). Culture: Japan. Dimensions: 43 1/4 × 33 1/2 in. (109.9 × 85.1 cm). Date: late 16th century.Battle surcoats (jinbaori) were produced from the Age of Civil War (ca. 1467-1603) through the end of the Edo period (1615-1867). Starting in the 16th century, they were worn over the newly-developed, light armor made of iron plates (toseigusoku) as a protection from rain, wind, and cold. With the arrival of the Portuguese in 1543, Japan became involved in global trade. Luxurious jinbaori began to be made of expensive, imported fabrics, notably fine Chinese silk damasks and gold brocades, as well as velvet and wool from the West. This luxurious and elegant Momoyama period jinbaori is of a very rare type; only three similar examples are known. All three belonged to warlords or high-ranking warriors associated with the great general Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598) or the first Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616).The surcoat's pleated "skirt" is a yellow and green Chine

Manchu Woman's Semiformal Court Vest (hsia-pei), 1662-1722, L.52-3/4 x W.48-1/2 in., Silk brocade, China, 17th-18th century, Court vests worn on formal occasions, unlike dragon robes, are constructed with a center front opening. The first two styles of vest reserved for the empress, imperial consorts, and crown princesses, were dark blue garments with horizontal bands of dragons. This example is of the third type. Its four ascending five-claw dragons on yellow ground indicated a garment appropriate to the wife of a first or second-degree prince.

Theatrical Robe for a Warrior, Kangxi period, 1662-1722, L.57 in. (144.78 cm), Satin, China, 17th-18th century, The horse tends to symbolize military spirit in many contexts in Chinese culture. Two horses gallop across the bottom section of this military robe. Winged lions roar in celestial landscapes on the waistline, while the lion masks decorating the front panels of the robe suggest power and strength.

Imperial summer ceremonial worm with dragon. The airy robe made of gold and colored embroidered silk gauze was used in summer. It was only allowed to be worn by the imperial family. The robe is slammed with imperial motifs like the five-patient dragons. In their number nine, they are considered symbol of perfection and refer to the unrestricted power claim of the Emperor. As a sign of a long life, the numerous luck motifs are like bats or peaches. The cuffs of the sleeves have the form of horse stages. This element was adopted by the clothing of the Mandschus, a rider's folk, which ruled in 1645 to 1911 in China.

Manchu Woman's Informal Court Robe, late 19th century, 58 x 77 1/2 in. (147.32 x 196.8 cm), Silk tapestry (kesi), China, 19th century, The informal level of court attire called ch'ang-fu included garments worn outside official court ceremonies. The more formal ch'ang-fu robes used the eight medallion scheme, imperial wave pattern in the hem, and large flared cuffs seen here. This striking gown features medallions and cuffs decorated with grass orchids (cymbidiums) and butterflies in well-coordinated patterns that create a sense of harmony. In addition to being a favorite flower of literati painters, the orchid is also a pun for 'grandson'. Informal special occasion robes tended to feature auspicious flowers and insects in their decoration rather than dragons, which designated official court attire.

Woman's Informal Coat with Large Rosettes. Culture: China. Dimensions: Overall: 44 x 52 in. (111.8 x 132.1cm). Date: 18th century.Roundels and rosettes have a long history in China, dating back to the seventh century. The embroidered rosettes on this robe are particularly notable for their fine detail. They are on a nearly hidden light-blue background and were set in, not applied to the surface of the garment, which features a subtly contrasting light-golden-yellow background embroidered with flowering branches. Exquisite robes such as this one were often refurbished for succeeding generations. The borders of this coat, for example, are from a later period. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
