Auspicious shou characters woven in gold denote longevity and incorporate the swastika, or wan, which signifies ten thousand years. Theatrical Robe for a Male Role second half of the18th century China This theatrical robe was designed to be worn by an elite male on a casual occasion. Its original form was derived from a long jacket of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It is beautifully embroidered using the needlepoint technique and is similar in color and pattern to Qing court theatrical costumes, now at the Palace Museum, Beijing.. Outer Robe (Uchikake) with Mount Hōrai second half of the 18th century-first half of the 19th century Japan The ancient Chinese legend of Penglai, a spiritual mountain of eternal life located in the eastern seas, lives on in this late-Edo-period robe. In Japan, the fantasy island, Mount Hōrai, became stylized as a gathering of cranes and tortoises in a bright landscape, like this one, dominated by pine, plum, and bamboo. Lamellar Armor (Byang Bu'i Khrab) and Helmet. Culture: Tibetan. Dimensions: H. as mounted approx. 59 in. (149.9 cm). Date: possibly 16th-17th century.This is a representative example of a Tibetan lamellar armor and helmet. Both pieces show signs of hard use and repairs. By comparison with examples that are thought to be earlier in date, its lamellae are relatively coarse, dark in color, roughly finished, and more irregular in size. Most Tibetan lamellar armors share several distinct features. The body of the armor has the form of a sleeveless robe made from twelve to fourteen or more rows of lamellae, and the coat has a distinct waist, with the lamellae of that row being bent in a subtle curve. Most armors are sleeveless, but some have shoulder defenses formed of several rows of lamellae, and full sleeves in at least one rare instance. Tunic probably 5th century Tunics, usually worn in layers, were the standard dress of the Mediterranean world. Officials, nobles, and well-to-do citizens wore long ones with expansive long sleeves. The outer garment was embellished with woven, ornamented medallions and bands, called clavi. Here, dancing warriors possibly associated with Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, decorate the squares. Ensemble fourth quarter 19th century Romanian Romanian folk costume has remained relatively unchanged and continues to be worn for festival occasions. The basic model for women consists of an embroidered blouse and skirt, belt, head scarf, and often a vest or jacket. As in many cultures, embroidery is placed at "vulnerable" areas of the body: the neck, cuffs, and hem, but also at the shoulders and sleeves as a symbol of strength. This example of a full festival costume is striking in the variation of blue tones and abundant embroidery. It resembles chōken, but it is longer, its side panels are sewn together, and it overlaps in front. It is worn belted at the waist to create blouson effect. This spectacular example is decorated with colorful phoenixes and clusters of paulownia leaves and blossoms. This auspicious combination originated in China, the former signifying a benevolent ruler and a well-ordered realm, the later serving as the bird's nesting place.

Manchu Woman's Unofficial Informal Robe, 19th century, L.54-3/4 x W.51-1/4 in., Embroidered silk gauze, China, 19th century, Designed for a young woman, this robe features a yellow scheme composed of a grid pattern with a scattered design of blue peonies against a white ground. The cuffs are embroidered with a multicolored peony scroll pattern, while the front, side, and cuff bands are embroidered with seasonal flowers, including grass orchid, peony, and plum, with bats and cicadas against a black ground. The yellow grid pattern features swastikas, a symbol adopted by Germanys Nazi (National Socialist) party in 1920. In this example, however, many years before that negative association, the symbol creates a pun of sorts. Pronounced 'wan' in Chinese, it sounds like 'ten thousand.' The swastika ground can be seen as a multiplier of the wealth and honor represented by the flowers times ten thousand.

Cofradía blouse (huipil), c. 1910, 24 3/4 x 39 1/4 in. (62.87 x 99.7 cm), Cotton, silk, Guatemala, 20th century, In this huipil, the red from the silk yarn has bled onto the white cotton fabric. Although it was common knowledge that silk yarns were not color-fast, the weaver's decision to use the brightly-colored yarn was a deliberate artistic choice. The run-off from the dye did not 'ruin' her garment; instead, it showcased the artist's ability to purchase expensive, imported silk. This prestige blouse would be worn to a cofradía ceremony, further solidifying her high status as a woman of honor and responsibility. The cofradía is a community-based religious group, responsible for ceremonies as well as the care of their local Catholic church.

Woman's ceremonial blouse (Huipil), c. 1955, 37 x 36 3/4 in. (94.0 x 93.3 cm), Cotton and silk; discontinuous weft patterning, Guatemala, 20th century, In parts of Guatemala, highly decorative blouses like this one were worn over the skirt and without a belt for celebratory occasions such as a wedding. This elaborately patterned woman's blouse (huipil) was constructed from three separately woven four selvedge panels. It took a great deal of time and considerable skill to make. In a society where weaving skills are highly valued, such as highland Guatemala, this blouse would be very much admired and appreciated by all who saw it and would have special significance for the woman wearing it.

Summer Kimono (Hito-e) with Heron and Reeds late 19th century Japan Herons have been one of the favorite birds of Japanese artists and poets since ancient times, as they are common sights in the rice paddies. Their favorite time to catch food is at dusk standing still in the shallows or in the reeds along the bank, the herons' varying shades of gray, blue, and black blend perfectly into the fading light and deepening shadows. Reeds, which grow along shorelines and riverbanks throughout Japan, have often inspired melancholy autumnal poetry. Sometimes, as in this summer garment, they are coupled with herons or egrets, a design inspired by paintings and woodblock prints. The reeds and the heron on this robe were reserved in white on the dark background. Details of the grasses, feathers, and beak were painted in, and the eyes and crests at the tops of the birds’ heads were enhanced with touches of embroidery..
