(10.5 cm)Diameter: 7 1/8 in.. Date: 8th century. The enigmatic scene on this cup painted in the 'codex-style' shows a jaguar holding an enema bladder with a syringe wearing what seems to be a bib made of white cotton. The ancient Maya consumed alcoholic beverages through enemas; special bone enema tubes have been found in royal tombs. In this scene, a supernatural bi-cephalic serpent is shown emerging from the enema; the head of the serpent to the left of the rollout photograph holds an axe, as if to threaten a skeletal death god. The death god is shown legless with its hands raised to the right of the jaguar. This type of jaguar makes an appearance in other vessel scenes, though a lack of comparative imagery and an overpainted hieroglyphic text impedes interpretation of the scene. 'Codex-style' pots are so-called for the style of painting which bears a close resemblance to the four extant screen-fold Maya books, k. Dish of porcelain, covered with a monochrome red glaze. The outer surface of this peach-shaped cup features a branch with leaves and blossoms, giving the impression that the fruit is still attached to an otherworldly tree. The cup's rim is enhanced with a tiny bat (fu), a pun with the word for blessings. (From Longevity in Chinese Art). These itineraries are often referred by the term Silk routes but were in fact crucial to the movement of constellations of materials and objects, as well as people and ideas. The diverse population of Nishapur and its surroundings, from the better-researched elite groups of merchants, land-owning aristocracy, and literates, to the less-known artisans, farmers, miners, and servants, were instrumental in adapting global cultural trends to create their own distinctive visual languages. This is seen in the material remains of everyday life in medieval Nishapur - from pots and pans to lighting devices, inkwells, textiles and trimmings, jewelry, games and toys, talismanic devices, weapons, coins, and architectural fragmFooted cup with human busts in medallions. They did not construct tall buildings, living instead in pithouses dug into the ground, but they created an extensive and complex irrigation system of canals that made large-scale agriculture possible in their arid environment. They also created vibrant two-toned ceramics in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. Hohokam artists are particularly known for including spirals in their designs, as seen in this large bowl. Their descendants, the O'odham, incorporated simillarly exuberant patterns into their art.Footed Bowl late 12th-first half 13th century. Footed Bowl. late 12th-first half 13th century. Also, no other centers of rock carving production have been identified for the early and the middle Islamic periods. The lobed shape of this stunning small bowl, a rare example of Central Asian rock crystal vessel, follows a long established tradition in that region and is found in a whole range of materials, such as metals, stone and ceramics. Despite the fact that we have no information on places of production eastwards of Iraq, there is no reason to believe that in the Iranian and Central Asian territories the legacy of Sasanian rock crystal manufacture was left entirely inactive.. Chinese potters of the mid-Tang dynasty (c. 675-750) revitalized a centuries-old tradition of low-fired, lead-rich glazes colored with metallic oxides. Artists of the late Western Han dynasty (1st century B.C.) had pioneered this technology by coating vessels, figures, and other objects of porous red earthenware with striking but easily weathered glazes of copper green and iron amber-brown. Utilizing harder and lighter-toned clays (often brightened with white slip), carefully fritted (melted and crushed) glazes, and measured recipes of metallic oxides, the Tang created stable and brilliant hues. Generally termed ìthree-colorî (sancai) after the archetypical combination of bright green, amber, and white (transparent) glazes, this palette also included a rare cobalt blue probably imported from Persia. Such fluid glazes could be dripped, spotted, splashed or neatly contained within carved, molded or impressed outlinesItalic civilizations, Piceni, 6th century b.C. Ceramic vessel. Eighteenth-century paintings, prints, and inventories indicate that tall cups, both with and without handles, were often intended for chocolate, especially those accompanied by a trembleuse saucer, which took various forms. In the du Paquier example in this case, the saucer has been made with a high openwork collar securing the cup.
