Traveling extensively throughout Great Russia, she collected many fine examples of textile art of the wealthy peasant class. From the 1870s until moving to France in 1902, Shabelsky amassed a large collection of intricately embroidered hand-woven household textiles and opulent festival garments with rich decoration and elaborate motifs. The Brooklyn Museum holdings include many fine examples including the majority of the garments. Portions of Shabelsky's collection are also housed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, and the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St. Petersburg. The ikat dyeing technique was brought to a high level of accomplishment in the 19th century in Central Asia, particularly in the area around the Fergana Valley, in modern-day Uzbekistan. The time-consuming process involves sequentially dyeing bundles of warps and wefts in multiple colors, each time with particular areas tightly wrapped to resist dye penetration, all before they are woven. Warps are then stretched on the loom and wefts are passed so as to create the intended pattern. While the patterns on these objects can be difficult to decipher, many appear to derive from floral motifs, talismanic forms, and Persian patterns. the chief design element here could have been based on a serrated leaf, a flower, or even a peacock.óIslamic Galleries, June 6, 2016. Unlike the other Bakhtiari double flour bag on view (MMA 2015.490.8), the ground here is executed in weft-faced plain weave using white cotton, and the patterning is made in sumak extra-weft wrapping with wool threads. The weaver chose to decorate the bag with repeating lozenges and other geometric motifs, as well as stylized human figures and animals. The closure is composed of a sumak band with slits finished with two-color overcast stitching on the front and braided loops at the back. Similar to the other double flour bag, a band of twining is worked into the plain-weave structure on the back, creating a more durable construction. This band also extends into the three-dimensional loops used for the closure.. Double Flour Bag. last quarter 19th century. Wool (warp, sumak weft, and pilePiece early 19th century Japan.
